Mamavation Week 9

It's been a couple of really bad weeks with the first week getting the house ready to move across the country to visiting Disney for a week to actually getting in a car and hauling all of us 29 hours in two days.  Needless to say, I have not weighed myself and know I will only be disappointed as I am sure I gained back all the weight I had lost.  I was planning on starting the Flat Belly Diet as it seems like a sensible and healthy approach to getting healthier but much to our demise, our new rental home has become a nightmare so not sure when it will become livable and we'll be able to start having the time to eat right.  I know I can make healthier choices but it's hard when it's stressful, you have a sore throat that won't let up and the kids are getting sick to not having suitable housing.

All in all, it's okay because I'll be back in the "saddle" and ready to kick this into gear as I have a pool that will hopefully be clean and ready to use for exercising and fun.

It's a short post but hope my next week's will be more robust and full of better news!  The good side of it all, both girls survived the move with catching a cold for my eight year old and nothing (yet) for my three year old.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that my eight year old's epilepsy stays stable and all the dust and past owner's cat in the new house doesn't trigger any asthma attacks on my three year old given her fragile lungs.

Mamavation Monday - Week 7

I'm late with my Mamavation week post this week as I forgot all about my post.  I had a hectic week, weekend and beginning week with having to get ready for the movers, who are here now with an expected final pack up at the end of the day tomorrow, Wednesday.  My daughter has her honors program tomorrow morning and then her last day of school is Thursday.  We leave Friday for Florida for a week at Disney and then on to Texas for a glorious 20 something hour drive for our new home.  I also signed up for my first class in pursuit for a Masters in Legal Studies starting July 4th.  It's been crazy busy and I slipped off my diet.  I have not even weighed myself in fear of what I'm going to see.

Now, I know I'm making excuses as I can still be without furniture and still stick to healthy eating but when I'm stressed and riddled with anxiety, it's hard to keep myself reminded of that.  So, that box of Girl Scout Cookies is easily tempting my patience as much as a naked Johnny Depp in front of me would.  Okay, he doesn't even have to be naked.  So today, I was ready to start out right and my middle one asked for pancakes which is my weakness.  I succumbed to that temptress but stopped with one.  For lunch, I will opt for a salad.

All in all, I am pretty positive that I've kept off at least 13 of the 18 that I originally lost since April so not all is lost.  I need to get more involved with Mamavation to keep on my journey to healthier living ... stay tuned as once I get settled, I will!

P&G, Kroger & USO Shake Hands with a Hero Initiative

Thank you to Procter & Gamble, Kroger and the USO for sponsoring this blog post and the Shake Hands With A Hero initiative. Please click here to learn more about this program. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

I love history and old war movies.  One of my favorites is Band of Brothers which took me many years to discover such an amazing story of a band of heroes among many.  I instantly fell for the main character by the name of Major Dick Winters along with the his fellow men in arms.  Coming from a family with a long line of military duty to include my father, his four brothers, two sisters and my husband, I have a special place in my heart for those that give themselves for the good of our country and our citizens.  When you are part of a military family, you know that the every day life of being in the military is a challenging one for all involved.  When a member of the family deploys, everyone is affected.  For me, each time my husband is deployed, I take back the role of a single mom.  I'm hardly a hero but I do hold down the fort, make sure the children are well and taken care of and take care of all the in-betweens.  There are so many families playing this role for many years now as the deployment rotation is frequent and reoccurring.

What I've learned from being in the military are the countless men and women who re-enlist in spite of the dangers.  These unselfish people put themselves in harms way in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan for our security, our rights and our livelihoods.  Many of these great people re-enlist while already serving a combat tour and many volunteer to go back in harms way after already serving more than one tour in a combat area.  I've seen the sadness of these men and women leaving, the happiness as they return and have seen the first hand harm these deployments cause to families.  To me, they are all heroes and definitely deserve a hand shake even if virtual.

I enjoy when others take the time to call out the sacrifices made for our men, women and children all involved in the military family unit.  Having P&G and Kroger partnering with the USO is a wonderful way to call attention and appreciation to our men and women.  The USO is an organization with 150 centers in 27 countries that provides an array of programs to include the famous USO shows that entertain the troops and their families for free.  Through this wonderful program, Kroger will donate $250,000 to the USO.  My husband just returned from another deployment and was lucky to have had some visitors as part of the USO come to their camp.  The USO also offers service to the men and women at airports which can be a great relief to those that have to travel far.

You can easily join in to show your appreciation with the partnership of P&G and Kroger to virtually "shake hands with a hero" at www.honoringourheroes.com.  The first 50,000 people to use the microsite application will receive a coupon loaded to their Kroger card for $1.00 off P&G products.

GNC Live Well™

Summer is upon us or at least it feels like it with 90+ temperatures in Georgia but I'm not complaining.  I love the warmth and the sunshine and with that comes my continue wellness path forward of getting in shape.  Since April, I have been on a diet with my oldest and have lost 16 pounds.  I am exercising, watching calories and fat intake and losing at a great pace.  I'm also taking a supplement that I purchased at GNC last month called OxyELITE Pro.  I feel it's helped give me the energy to exercise on those days where I'm too tired.  We have a busy month with moving out of our house, a trip to Disney and a move to Texas, all back to back so this has been one of my motivators for getting healthier.

USPlabs OxyELITE Pro™ - USP LABS 1010125 - GNC

I've been a GNC fan for years and have relied on them for many of the products I use to stay and feel healthier.  The OxyELITE Pro states it's mandatory to get physician approval before taking and USPlabs used Good Manufacturing Practices to ensure high quality and purity.  There is a warning list so if this interests you, please review prior to purchasing.  To date, I've had no issues taking it to include no palpations as I have with other products in the paste.  I definitely would recommend the product based on my personal experiences.

GNC carries an array of products:

  • Vitamins & Supplements
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Protein
  • Diet
  • Cleansing & Digestion
  • Super Food & Greens
  • Herbs
  • Energy & Endurance
  • Pets
  • Beauty Care
  • Equipment & Accessories

Since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, it's a good time to shop at GNC and to win a $100 Gift Card!   Check out the Community page at GNC for tips and more here.  According to the President's Council's site, the following key takeaways are:

  • Adults 18 and older need 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days a week to be healthy; children and teens need 60 minutes of activity a day for their health.
  • Significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity (e.g., 30 minutes of brisk walking or raking leaves, 15 minutes of running, 45 minutes of playing volleyball). Additional health benefits can be gained through greater amounts of physical activity.
  • Thirty to sixty minutes of activity broken into smaller segments of 10 or 15 minutes throughout the day has significant health benefits.
  • Moderate daily physical activity can reduce substantially the risk of developing or dying from cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, such as colon cancer. Daily physical activity helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, helps prevent or retard osteoporosis, and helps reduce obesity, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and symptoms of arthritis.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States. Physically inactive people are twice as likely to develop coronary heart disease as regularly active people.
  • 37% of adults report they are not physically active. Only 3 in 10 adults get the recommended amount of physical activity.
  • Poor diet and inactivity can lead to overweight/obesity. Persons who are overweight or obese are at increased risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems and some types of cancer.

Almost Disney Bound!

We're just a little over a week from going to Disney.  This is the family vacation that my husband missed last year since he was in Kuwait but this year, to celebrate his return, we are going there.  We plan on spending seven days just in time to catch Star Wars Weekend!  We're a house of Star Wars geeks so this is heaven!  Last year, we arrived, the girls and I, just in time to catch the parade and it was AWESOME!  We were lucky in that a kind woman let my middle one go to the front just a bit away from me so she could enjoy the view.  I had my eyes on her the whole time.

Our movers arrive next Monday to start packing up for our Army move to Texas.  This is going to be a huge change for the two younger ones not to mention myself and my oldest.  This will be the first time that I'll be away from my "baby" and her baby.  Both my daughter and her daughter are staying behind with her fiance.  Georgia is the only home my youngest knows since we moved here from Hawaii when she was two months old. It's definitely going to be an adventure!  We will take off from here on Thursday or Friday to Florida and then after a week, we start driving to Texas .. yee haw!

Since we're leaving a little earlier, our rental house is not going to be ready so I'm checking out the special from Hotels.com which is why it's linked below so just ignore that please :) .

I Have Great Readers!

I just announced the names of five winners for my giveaways that ended 5/7 and all five already responded to collect their prizes!  Blogging is great in that I get to make someone's day even if in a small way so it's always nice to be able to close out giveaways quickly.  Last week, one of my readers notified me she never received a gift card she won from way back in October.  I contacted the PR person along with the general e-mail and she received her card the next day.  I am grateful that my readers do understand that sometimes it's out of my hands but I will try all that I can to ensure they receive their prize.

Thanks to all the loyal readers I have as you allow me the chance to receive more products to review and giveaway!

Mamavation - Week Six Even Mothers Need Mothering

This past week was an interesting week with the return of my husband from Kuwait and an upcoming move and more.  I decided to reward myself one day and ate too much and then on Friday, I ate half an order of General Tso's Chicken from my favorite Chinese place.  Luckily, it was one of the worse orders I have had from them so I didn't eat it all which is good.  Bad is my daughter brought home a Mother's Day from school which they partnered with the local grocery store who makes awesome cakes so I splurged on that.  That would have been alright as Saturday rolled around as I was doing well until 5 pm when I broke down and had another piece of cake and then a ton of chips and salsa.  I haven't even weighed myself as I know from early yesterday, I picked up a couple of pounds so I'm sure I'm still there.

After receiving my Mother's Day gift from my eight year old, I teared up to see how far she has come with writing her own cards and making gifts.  My youngest was dressed and playing with a puppet that my very kind friend at AdorableBabyClothing sent them.  The picture reinforced why I have to get healthier as I want to see them make all the milestones from childhood to adult.  Today, I'm being pampered as a mother should be from time to time!

I'm on a race to get in shape for our trip to Disney May 20th.  I have been trying and retrying and I keep failing until about three week's ago where I was able to stay committed to my diet of the moment.  I had lost 16 pounds but since I picked back up 2, I'm at 14 down.  I am not letting it set me back as I know that I was rewarding myself for being a mom and although my food choices could have been better, I'm still learning. I did pick up a Kit Kat bar and ate only one of the four bars and put it down.  It wouldn't have been too long ago that I would have devoured the whole thing like a lion to a gazelle but I am learning on my baby step journey.  Today, starts the renewed diet path forward, being patient with myself, so cheers!

This week's Blogging Carnival question:

Do you know when to back off of your efforts? When is the last time you took a step back in the name of gentle kindness to yourself?

I would say that I don't mainly because when I back off, it's all or nothing and when it's nothing, I binge-like eat.  I don't know limits sometimes and I've always been a stress eater.  I'm learning though and when I fall off the band wagon, I think of Pete telling us to reward ourselves not with food but with something else.  I'm making slow progress but I'm making progress so I can't be too hard on myself.  Gone are the days of telling myself I'm fat and never going to do it.  I've been afraid to tell my family that I'm on diet #98789 because I keep failing but to me, as long as I keep trying, I'm not failing.  It took some time to not be so harsh toward myself but I feel success is there as every day, I'm getting there and it's an every day habit.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the Mamavation Blogging Carnival for a chance to win a Jillian Moriarity workout  DVD from Jillian Moriarity” at the end of your post if you enter the blogging carnival.

Happy Mother's Day!

A Mother Casts Her Dreams into the Sea

A mother casts her dreams into the sea;
We, the words sent bobbing towards the sun,
The eggs of stone, the shards of prophesy.

Because she must conclude her melody
And fall back to the sweet dark hush of One,
A mother casts her dreams into the sea,

Hoping to cross that wild infinity
And on some infant shore again to run,
The eggs of stone, the shards of prophesy

Outside the fiery circle of memory,
The howling surf, the incessant years undone ...
A mother casts her dreams into the sea

And then dissolves into a tapestry,
Her rolling, helpless drift again begun,
The eggs of stone, the shards of prophesy

Afloat once more upon eternity,
Once more the alien fury, never done ...
Again, again, her dreams into the sea,
The eggs of stone, the shards of prophesy!

MyExtra Customized Gum Packs Review

I just created my own MyExtra Gum packs with a picture and text for Mother's Day.  My oldest, who is a new mom, loves gum so it seemed like the perfect idea to test out my complimentary review pack on her.  It's very easy to get started and all you have to do is select your theme if you have one.  They have all the special events covered with great looking templates to further simplify the process.  After I selected the Mother's Day theme I liked, I allowed a connection to my Facebook account so I could just grab pictures since I'm not on my main computer with all the other pictures.  See how neat it is?

Each MyExtra pack contains 15 sticks available in peppermint, spearmint or watermelon.  If you need some ideas, you can look at the gallery.

It's very user friendly and provides that extra touch since you can personalize it.  Makes for great party favors, party invitations, wedding favors and much more.  I think it's a great idea and the ordering process is so easy!  Stay tuned for the final review on delivery, appearance and taste!

I haven't been to a museum in years but I have fond memories of them while in school.  The educational experience alone should be making me feel ashamed of myself for not taking my children to one sooner.  I think the only one in our area closed down but all I have to do is check out LocalPages.com and search for the closest one.  I was surprised that there are three other museums in the Augusta, Georgia area.

I'm really loving the LocalPages feature of finding anything I want so quickly not to mention local deals, coupons and more in one spot.  It's really a great resource for everything local!

The Megasaurus Book Review

The Megasaurus by Thomas Weck and Peter Weck is a delightful, creative story about facing problems, solving problems and having respect.  This 40 page hardcover book is full of wonderful illustrations by Len DiSalvo and caught the eyes of both my girls.  The story is set in the Kingdom of Beandom where the bean-shaped bears face a terrible monster and have to figure out how to save themselves.  The King calls on his advisors, three wise owls, to come up with the solution.  In spite of all that Howl the Owl, Towel the Owl and Vowel the Owl think they know, they have no time to hear what L. Joe Bean has to say.  As each one takes a turn at their "wise" idea, the story ends with a surprise.

L. Joe Bean is just an ordinary bear so they laugh at his plan and discount it.  The outcome shows kids that sometimes, the solution is found where you don't expect it.  My girls, ages 4 and 8, really enjoyed the book and my 8 year old was able to read it herself.  The recommended ages are 4-8 so this was perfect for them.  I also enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

The last two pages include Extend the Learning Activities ideas for parents, grandparents and teachers to share even more with the children.  I definitely prefer books that offer educational benefits coupled with life lessons and this is one of those.

The Megasaurus is the first title in a series of books being published by Lima Bear Press, Inc.

Following your blog :D And I LOVE the Jenny bear!! :D

Teddy bears make the perfect gift whether it's a birthday, a new baby, new love or for no reason at all.  Finding a bear that shows you care is hard to do because there are so many stuffed animals on the market but rarely do you find handmade ones that are so cute, adorable and have an emphasis on safety.  TG Bears makes each bear in-house by the same person which to me, means quality as it's not manufactured in mass production facilities.  Each bear has safety eyes, noses and joints and are washable (once any applicable accessory has been removed)!  Can you believe that?  Washable!  What a great feature as anyone with children know that their stuffed animals take a beating at times.

Another feature from TG Bears are the choices you make when ordering your very own TG Bear.  If you select Classic Bear, you can choose the color of ribbon you want from the available colors.  The Signature Collection have custom neckwear from Tall Guys Ties.  The neckties and scarves are 100% silk.  The Specialty Bears vary but all bears are 16" and you can choose the optional growl feature and personalized right sole at an additional cost.

No Work Spanish Review

I've always wanted to learn a new language and wanted my children to be able to speak another language.  Spanish seems ideal given the increase of a dual language society.  I was excited to receive my complimentary copies of No Work Spanish Poster Girl and Yaks Walk on Washington.  What makes No Work Spanish different is there is no homework, no language drills as all you do is listen and learn.  This brand new concept introduces the language in English first and then in Spanish so you learn Spanish by listening.  At the start of each chapter, an introductory to repeated words is provided.  After you listen to the chapter which is spoken sentence by sentence first in English and then in Spanish, the entire chapter is repeated in Spanish.

The lessons are available in CDs or can be downloaded.  They range from 50 minutes to an hour and 45 minutes with each story having a different reader.  You can try it for free here.

My Review:

I've been listening to the CDs while I wait for my daughter to get out of school.  I find the time I have is quiet and I can focus on giving it my undivided attention  I have picked up words from listening and I'm sure after longer use, I could pick up sentence structure too.  I do like that I can hear the pronunciation of the words.  The stories provide an enticement to listen as you want to know what happens so that is also a bonus.  I don't think my eight year old would be patient enough to listen to the story over and over again to pick up the words but I think given the right person, it would be a good tool to reinforce the Spanish language and to learn.

You can read an additional review here.
