Embracing a Healthy Family

One Important Way to Extend Your Love

Don't you feel the love in the air with Valentine's Day approaching fast?  Having kids and a family, you feel the love all the time with those little eyes looking at you with so much adoration.  There is nothing that I won't do for my children and I'm sure if you have kids, you are the same.  I was just telling my oldest to take care of her skin as time goes by so fast and when you are young as she is, 21, you don't think about the future as it's hard to comprehend being 40, 50, 60 and so forth.  Taking care of yourself early not only includes being healthy and doing smart things like exercise but an often overlooked action we can take to extend our love beyond our time here, is to purchase life insurance.  The LIFE Foundation is encouraging everyone to look beyond the years and cover your family.  It's logical and sensible but often overlooked for many reasons.

MomSelect Bloggers are teaming up with the non-profit LIFE Foundation to get the word out on the LIFE Foundation's Crazy4Love Photo Contest from now until February 19, 2010.

About the Contest

To get Americans thinking about life insurance as an expression of enduring love, the nonprofit LIFE Foundation is sponsoring the Crazy4Love Photo Contest. From now until February 19, we’re asking people to share digital photos that demonstrate how they’ve expressed their love to the ones they love. It can be a picture of you and your spouse or significant other. Or maybe a picture of you with your children or other close relatives or friends.

LIFE is interested in photos that capture the full range of emotions – from expressions of love that are crazy or embarrassing to ones that are romantic or tender. Your photo must be accompanied by a short caption – no more than 50 words – that describes what is particularly meaningful or memorable about the digitally captured, loving moment. Please make sure to include your name and email address in the caption, so we have a way of contacting you if your photo is selected as one of the winners. LIFE is collecting entries on the popular microblogging website tumblr.com. Please read the next section for information on how to enter the Contest.

How to Enter (http://www.insureyourlove.org/):

The deadline to submit entries is February 19, 2010.
  1. Read the Contest Rules. Please note that you may only submit one photo.
  2. View the example below on how to send a valid submission which must include your name, email address and a description (50 words or less) telling us why this is a meaningful or memorable moment. Then visit www.lifefoundation.tumblr.com/submit
  3. After entering the information and clicking the submit button, your photo will post to http://www.lifefoundation.tumblr.com/ once it's been approved by the moderator. This means you may not see it appear at first until it has been approved.

The Grand Prize winner, as determined by the LIFE Foundation, will receive a $1,000 Travelocity gift certificate toward a romantic getaway. LIFE will also award five runners-up with $100 American Express gift cards.

*Disclaimer:  I received nothing for this blog post.  I am entering a contest to win a $250 American Express gift card and Insure Your Love family Gift Basket filled with Valentine's Day-themed children's books, DVDs and toys.

If Mama Ain't Planning 2010 Devotional/Organization Review

Photobucket

Format: e-book
Price: $9.99
Affiliate Program also available!

This is a Mama Buzz review. The product was provided by:  Anitra Elmore for this review.

About the Author:

Anitra Elmore has two children and has been married for 15 years.  She has a Master's Degree in Elementary Education, a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, and has completed courses at Masters International School of Divinity.

Anitra combines her passions for writing, teaching and encouraging women, while blogging at If Mama Ain't... (because if mama ain't right, things can go terribly wrong) and The MamaZone (where you'll find great T.I.D.B.I.T.S to make your mama-life easier). She has participated in various capacities of ministry for the last 17 years and currently lives in North Carolina with her family.

The Review:

The If Mama Ain't Planning 2010 is truely a unique experience at least for me who is raising the bar of spiritual enrichment.  I have always considered myself a Christian but lacked the Biblical teachings to fully understand the Christian experience of learning and studying the Bible.  I have a friend who hammers me constantly about reading and studying the Bible every day and although I have good intentions, I always seem to fail.  That is the main reason I wanted to participate in this review. After reading If Mama Ain't Happy, I realized everything Anitra stated was true.  There is so much weight on being the mama of the house and whether we like it or not, our actions do reflect upon everyone in the house.  For myself, I am more than happy to serve this role.  After I read all about Anitra's take on If Mama Ain't Happy, I knew this was for me.

The eBook contains:
  • 12 monthly devotional articles
  • 12 month-at-a-glance calendars
  • A prayer focus for each month
  • A spiritual habit for each month
  • 3 key memory verses per month
  • Reflect, Project and Connect each month
  • Space for what you must do and might do
  • Space for daily meal planning
  • Space for weekly goals
  • Print all at once or one month at a time
  • Supplemental pages added to the website regularly (see Stay Updated tab
Every portion of the contents of the eBook is arranged in a great user friendly manner.  Each area is inspirational to encourage spiritual learning.  The idea of incorporating devotional time into getting organized is logical yet I never thought about connecting the two.

Devotional Reading:

Each month, there is a devotional reading.  This sets the stage for the theme to focus on to maximize your learning and organizational time.  The thought provoking questions also reinforces the need to study and ponder what you just read.  The area for notes and reflection is also nice as you will have the ability to not only capture your thoughts but it's a resource to refer to in the future.

Monthly Calendar:

The ability to see the months at a glance is another nice feature of this eBook.  The calendar's aspects encourages reflection of the prior month by jotting your honest thoughts.  Anitra also encourages the reader to consider what you want to see for that particular month.  Given that I'm a novice at devotion, I really appreciated the section suggestions on readings.  The beauty of the eBook it tries to help with suggestions versus mandates.  This allows for any level of spirituality to partake and learn.  The three memory versus are also excellent in increasing your knowledge of scripture.

The monthly prayer encourages the reader on what to focus on or by using the theme, it will help to guide the prayers.

The area on walk  also promotes the reader in developing key spirtual habits or disciplines.

Weekly Calendar:

This area breaks it down even further in order to concentrate fully with key versus and goals, suggested reading and dailly reminders, must do and might do items to help with organization and even a menu section to record your daily food ideas or intake.

Supplement Pages:

The supplemental pages are equally nice to have.  The Task Tracker is something I can use for work, at home and for my blog.  I know I can definitely put the Weight Tracker to good use since I'm trying to get healthier.  There is a Full Year on One Page option and a Grocery List.  I like the set up of the grocery list which again, helps you to get and stay organized.

eBook Instructions:

The instructions for printing is very easy to understand and they are flexible in allowing the reader to choose how they want to format their printed information.  The helpful hints are logical and appreciated such as ensuring you have enough ink in the printer to holding everything in a binder for easier organization of the eBook.

I really enjoyed using the eBook this past week.  I learned a lot, it encouraged me in furthering my devotional time as well as it did help to organize my busy life by writing out what I had to do and categorizing into what was a must do versus a might do.

I would encourage this great eBook for anyone interested in increasing their spiritual knowledge while organizing their lives.  It really does go hand in hand and Anitra does a fantastic job in making this path forward easy and practical.  I would love to see a kid's version!

10% of proceeds go to Friends of Mirembe in support of the African Children's Choir.

You can find Anitra's writings online at Blissfully Domestic, Gospel360 Online and Faith Writers.

CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Gloss Review

My oldest is always looking for that great new lip gloss or product that adds some shimmer without the greasy, filmy feel.  She's almost addicted to lip gloss as she is with chocolate.  So far, unlike chocolate, she's not found that magic product.  When Shine sent three CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Glosses for review as my next Beauty Guru assignment, I grabbed her and my husband to help test out the ShineBlasts.  Okay, I didn't make him try it on rather I did make him endure the face twisting, arm turning request of 'let me kiss you to see how much comes off.'

Container:

The difference with Covergirl ShineBlast is in the applicator (coming up next).  The twist off applicator prevents excess lip gloss as it's pulled out of the sleek container. It doesn't pull out smoothly and has a little resistence but this is not an issue for me as I would rather have just the right amount of gloss versus too much which not only wastes the product but leaves an unnatural appearance.

Applicator:

The applicator is definitely slimmer on the end and was at the right angle for easy, precise application.  Covergirl states this "features a breakthrough ShineSculpt applicator expertly designed to hug the contours of your lips and its tapered tip is perfect for precise shaping."

Fragrance:

Each of the three ShineBlast I received had a different fragrance and unfortunately, the one my daughter preferred has no name so I am unable to provide that shade.  The other two are Ignite and Ember.  I didn't notice any different smell but I liked the berry aroma each one had.

Coverage:

The gloss went on smooth and what we both liked was it did not leave a greasy, film to our lips.  Many lip glosses leave behind an unpleasant taste or a waxy film behind.  I thought the texture, taste and smell were perfect.  CoverGirl provides tips on getting the maximum results from the ShineBlast Lip Gloss:
  • For a daytime look: just apply the gloss to the top lip, then kiss the bottom lip for a wearable high shine.
  • For a super sexy, pouty look: dab an extra amount on the center of the bottom lip for a high shine focal point.
  • To make your gloss last longer: apply a thin layer of lip liner in the shade of your natural lip color, all over your lip.  This will help the gloss wear longer.
For me, this was different from applying other lip glosses as one application from the container would suffice for both the upper and lower lip.  With the CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Gloss, you only need to apply on the upper lip unless you opt for the "super, sexy, pouty look."  Each application was enough for one lip, not both.  If the tips are followed, this isn't an issue.

The polymer and oil-rich formula delivers the high shine with luminescent droplets of pearlized pigment.

The high gloss coverage appearance doesn't last long but I could still feel it on my lips for about an 30 minutes.  It does come off with contact but in all fairness, the product is not marketed to resist rubbing off.

Two of the three shades had a rosy or red appearance and the third, Ember, was semi-clear.  There was a slight coloring with the unknown shade and Ignite.  The array of fun shades leave a subtle wash of coloring on your lips that givess you a more natural look but with knock out shine.

The 16 shade palette was co-designed with Celebrity make-up artist Pat McGrath to give you a blast of shimmer behind the shine.

Overall:

My daughter recommends the CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Gloss.  She thought the coverage was just right, it didn't leave a heavy feel and the amount of gloss was ideal for her complexion and tastes.

I also recommend CoverGirl ShineBlast Lip Gloss due to the lightweight feel, fun vast array of shades, the taste and how my lips feel more moisturized.  I would like for the gloss appearance to last a little longer but overall, it's a good new product that is designed perfectly for the contours of my lips.  The small container makes it easy to conceal if you are going out on the town or just want to throw it in your purse or slip in a pocket.

Extra:

BzzAgent and Philips Lifeline Review with Coupon

BzzAgent's latest campaign that I'm participating in is the Philips Lifeline.  This is an important one to me as I have two elderly parents that I worry about.  My primary concern is my father who, in his 70's, is still active but I always worry about him falling or being alone while my mom is away.  When I signed up for the Phillps Lifeline campaign, I received the special Lifeline Phone with a Timex special watch that has an alert button for help.

Setup:

The setup was effortless.  All I had to do was follow the easy to read instructions to set up the phone.  Once I set up the phone, I had to hit the panic button to have a representative from Phillips Lifeline call me back.  The representative was very friendly and professional.  He was also patient in ensuring that all the information they had was correct and offered tips and suggestions in ensuring the appropriate help would be sent pending the potential emergency.  He was thorough in the instructions and ensured all my questions were answered.  I was impressed with the level of customer service exhibited by this agent.

Active:

Once I provided the phone and watch to my parents, it was again, easy for them to undertand the process.  Luckily, we've not had to utilize the service and you are free to test the service to ensure it's in working order.  My father's only complaint is he wishes the watch had some protective functionality as he's always worried he will set off the button.  I explained to him that the agent said to not worry if that happens.

As of date, I would recommend the service for peace of mind if something happens to where your loved one is alert enough to be able to push the panic button.  The watch is a nice feature in that no matter where they are in the house or yard, they will be able to receive help if needed.

If you would like to learn more, visit Philips here:  http://www.lifelinesys.com/

Trusted by Doctors, Hospitals and Professional Caregivers: Philips Lifeline, the #1 medical alert service, is easy-to-use and designed to reduce the risk of living alone. Dr. Fincher - Dermatologist Special Interview on Aging/Treatment for Aging

I have tried product after product trying to find the perfect cream, serum or other miracle cure over the counter to stop aging and even reverse the signs of premature aging.  I have used products that offer a subtle change but nothing has been as drastic as what I saw after I received my first Botox treatment three years ago.  I tried it once more before I became reluctant in continuing its use.  I've often wondered about the various treatments, fillers and injections that are offered but have not had a chance to investigate further.

Megan Brown, Light Years Ahead, was able to virtually introduce me to Edgar F. Fincher, M.D., Ph.D.  I was delighted to have the opportunity for a question and answer session.

First, I'll give you some information on Dr. Fincher:

Dr. Edgar F. Fincher received both his MD and PhD degrees from The University of Tennessee, Memphis. He then completed early training in General Surgery at Stanford University followed by a research fellowship, also at Stanford University, where he studied mechanisms of skin wound healing. Dr. Fincher then completed his Dermatology residency at Stanford University before relocating to Los Angeles for a Fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery, laser and cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Fincher's areas of expertise include the treatment of skin cancers using the Mohs surgery technique, facial plastic reconstruction following skin cancer removal, laser treatment of the skin as well as cosmetic surgery (facelifts, eyelid surgery and liposuction). Dr. Fincher has conducted extensive research into the mechanisms by which the skin heals and utilizes this information to create a superior surgical outcome with minimal scarring.

Dr. Fincher has conducted numerous presentations about his surgical techniques and laser research at national meetings for dermatologic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons and laser surgeons including work on the use of cutting edge lasers for skin rejuvenation, suture lifts for facial lifting and the combined use of liposuction with Thermage for maximizing neck rejuvenation.

By offering a wide range of treatments and the latest cutting edge technology, Dr. Fincher is able to tailor make the ideal surgical treatment for the individual patient and to provide a variety of laser techniques to ensure the ideal outcome following either cosmetic surgery or facial reconstruction after tumor removal.

Dr. Fincher and his wife, Dr. Helen Fincher, practice out of the Fincher Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California.

They provide many services and products and I saw they offer Dysport which is the latest competitor of Botox.

One of the factors I have looked for before trying to decide on a procedure or a dermatologist, are the pictures.  Fincher Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery offers before and after photos of facelift, facelift with chin implant, blepharoplasty, necklift and liposuction.

Just look at the difference in these two pictures of this patient who had a facelift:

If you've ever wondered about the various products and procedures available, Dr. Finchers' site is perfect for educating yourself.  Each product and procedure has a description of what the product/procedure is used for, what treatments will consists of and what to expect.

My Question and Answer Session:

Once a woman begins to see the signs of aging, what steps should she take to prevent further damage?

Unfortunately, part of aging is genetic process that we all must face, but this doesn't mean that we can't control it, reverse it or slow the clock down. Other parts of aging, or factors that will accelerate the process include sun exposure, nutrition and environmental factors such as smoking. Sunscreens prevent aging and protect the skin and collagen, good nutrition helps the body maintain the skin and its collagen. There are laser treatments and fillers that are also wonderful for either maintaining healthy skin or reversing visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, brown spots of loose skin. Topical skin care products such as retinoids or glycolic acid containing products can also help reverse signs of aging.

At age 40, I noticed an increase of crows feet and sagging upper lids, what do you recommend as the best treatment to reverse the appearance of those lines and sagginess?

The eyes are many peoples' tell-tale factor on aging. Loose eyelid skin can make one appear tired, older or run down. Add a few lines around the eyes and it is intensified. Loose eyelid skin can easily be treated by surgically removing the skin with blepharoplasty surgery. In many cases, this is a simple 1 hour procedure performed under local anesthesia. The excess skin is carefully measured and trimmed to create a smooth refreshed upper eyelid. For earlier or minimal skin laxity of the upper eyelid, a laser can be used to tighten the skin without surgery. The lines around the eyes, crow's feet, can be treated with either botox injections, laser resurfacing or both. The botox relaxes the muscles that are making the lines and helps smooth the skin. Laser resurfacing removes old damaged collagen, smoothes out the lines, tightens the skin and removes any pigmentation that might be associated. Botox injections are repeated every 3-4 months and laser resurfacing is generally a one time procedure with results that last years.

What should women of any age do to protect their skin from premature and normal aging?

Sunscreen and moisturizers are the two easiest and most important preventive actions that can be done. Sunscreens protect skin from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB that can damage collagen and elastin leading to wrinkles and also cause unwanted pigmentation.

With so many products such as fillers, Botox, laser surgery and so forth, what procedure do you use the most for your clients and why?

Every treatment is geared towards providing patients with the right treatment or combination to meet their needs and wishes. In our practice we offer the full spectrum of non-surgical to surgical treatments along with around 20 lasers. We take pride in being able to offer all options and not to pressure our patients to do treatments. We offer a comprehensive consultation and evaluation and then offer the appropriate treatments or combinations. These days, many people prefer to do a combination of smaller procedures in order to possibly avoid a larger procedure or to avoid the healing time of surgery. In many cases, this is appropriate and we can offer this alternative to them. The advances in laser technology have provided us with the ability to improve results, with safer treatments and minimal downtime. If these minimal downtime procedures are not appropriate and surgery is indicated, then we take pride in providing the latest techniques and the highest quality.

What are your experiences and thoughts on Botox? Do you feel there could be long term implications in using Botox such as permanent droopiness of the lids?

Botox has an incredibly safe record. Complications from the cosmetic botox injections are very rare and short-lasting. Drooping eyelids are from the botox being placed too close to the eye and will subside when the botox wears off. In properly trained hands, Botox or Dysport can do wonders to rejuvenate the face by reducing lines, and even elevating the eyebrows for a more alert refreshed look.

When choosing a dermatologist, what should you look for in terms of qualifications?

With any physician, Board Certification in their specialty is a fundamental but important point to look for as an absolute minimal criterium. Beyond this, you must look at the background training, such as the institution of residency training, expertise beyond the specialty, either double board certification or additional education may be a factor. Is the doctor a cosmetic doctor, a clinical doctor or both are also important questions depending upon the patient's needs. Even beyond this, you must look into what sort of practical experience a doctor has and what sort of applied expertise he or she has to offer.

What products do you recommend on a routine basis for women and men to use at home?

The three basic products are an oil-free moisturizer to nourish and hydrate the skin. Second, sunscreen is very important to protect and prevent UV damage resulting in fine lines, wrinkles and discoloration. Third, a retinoid product such as Tretin X, Renova, Tazorac or Avage. These products have been clinically proven to reverse sun damage, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduce pigment and rebuild collagen in the skin. Beyond this, there are other products containing growth factors or antioxidants that may provide extra benefits.

Ending comment Dr. Fincher:
The most important concept that patients should remember is that every person's needs are different. A beauty consultation should consist of evaluating a patient's skin and facial structure, listening to their needs and desires for areas of improvement. Once the evaluation is complete, various treatment options including topical skin care, laser and light therapy, fillers and or surgical procedures that can meet these needs can be discussed and an individualized treatment plan is developed.

I would like to thank Megan and Dr. Fincher for this great opportunity to explore the world of aging treatments.

Portability - The HP Mini 110 is so lightweight that I would have the ability to create medical record journals from Excel for my two chronically ill children.  Due to the newness of both of their medical conditions, the specialists have requested journals to record symptoms associated with their asthma/allergies for the two year old and Epilepsy for the six year old.  Since the HP Mini 110 is so light, I can carry the laptop to the doctor's office for real time access to their journals and any other notes I made.  This will be a great way to organize all of our medical records to include prescription medications as we have three daily meds at the moment to track and refill.
  2. Organization - Another great feature of Windows® 7 is the desktop Outlook gadget for upcoming appointments.  While in the doctor's office, I can immediately check my availability and record new appointments.  The appointment's feature can also be set up to remind me of important events like birthdays so I'll never forget.  This is a great time saver and will assist in organizing my life.
  3. Kid Control - Having two young kids, not to mention, five in the house, one television is never enough given the demands and desires of each child.  Add in a Playstation and a Wii system and there is even more demand for the television.  The new version of Windows® 7 Media Center allows you to hook up a TV tuner and either they can watch something else or I can watch a relaxing show somewhere else.  Even if I don't get a TV tuner, I can opt to use internet TV which is another great feature of Windows® Media Center.  No drama, no fighting and an easy way to make life a little bit easier.
  4. The new Windows® 7 also offers Remote Media Streaming.  This is a great feature that gives you access to your main PC to show off those pictures and videos you have saved.  No more bulky photo albums to carry around, no worries if you didn't download a particulare one or even if you need something for work, it's all accessible now.  This is also going to be a great feature as my husband will be deployed to Kuwait in May and we'll be able to stream all the pictures and videos to him across the internet with no issues of sending e-mails too large for attachments and slow download speeds.  This will definitely streamline both of our time online.
  5. Time Saver - Multi-tasking is the name of the game at least for me.  I am constantly working on several projects whether it's something for my girls, the historical novel I'm writing or my blogging, I usually have many windows opened which can slow me down at times.  Windows® 7 has this great feature of taskbars with views.  The thumbnail previews allows quick views of what I want so I can toggle quickly between my applications.  Pinning is another feature that will speed up my online time to free up my time for other activities.  Pinning allows for one click access to programs that I use a lot.  It may not seem to be a big deal but if you have a fast, efficient computer, you can accomplish a lot in a five minute window.
Whether it's organizing all medical records into one location for portability and access at doctor's office or accessing all special events and doctor's appointments, the efficiencies gained with quick access, less paper trails and accurate records will allow for more efficiencies.  The new Windows Media Center and taskbar views and streaming pictures and videos equates to less time online which means more time for other activities.  The HP Mini 110 has almost endless possibilities for simplifying the life of anyone but especially for this full time working, mother of five, Army wife.
