Taking it Easy on a Sunday & Tomorrow is the Big Day

Today was a day of rest and kiddie fun at the school's playground.  We have a swingset/play area at our house but it's backed up against the very woodsy backyard and with the increase of snakes, I'm a little reluctant to let them out in the area.  I've never seen so many spiders and snakes than I have since we moved to Georgia and I can't say that I'm going to miss them one bit when we live unless we trade it in for something worse!   That's one benefit to military life is the ever changing new environments we get to experience every three years. I'm not sure how the kids will do with school so I will have to figure out ways to help compensate for that when the time is right.


We did something that I vowed I was not going to do often which was elect for fast food.  After watching a PBS special on Diet Free and reading the great book Vintage Remedies which I posted a review on, I am worried even more about modern day foods.  I want to get on a mission to make the right food choices and what I noticed both from the program on TV and the book, you make little strides to make it work.  You can't change everything you have done over years and years in a day which is absolutely correct.  I've already eliminated sodas from my diet with an occasional one here and there but no more than two a week if even that much.  I sadly admit that I let my seven year old drink them but starting yesterday, she gets one a day until we run out of the existing supply and then it will be only a treat.  It's all water from here on out with some juice.  She usually drinks Glaceau Smart Water 24 20oz Bottles as with epilepsy, I read the replacement of electrolytes is good.


I diverged a bit but after we ate, we played and then went home for more needed rest.  I needed it more because my soon to be three year old kept me up through the night with a sore on her tongue.  I think she's been chewing on it or she bit it.  She had a chewing fetish on blankets that just ended about two weeks ago so I think this is a carry over. 

   

Tomorrow is a big day as my oldest, almost 22 years old, will find out the gender of her baby that is due 10/10/10!  I am so excited and can't wait to find out as is she and the father!  My husband will have to get the news via e-mail as is everything else.  This is the second summer in a row that he'll be in the Middle East.

She did take the Intelligender Gender Detection Test Kit so we get to see how accurate it is!

Lately, I have been dabbling in other areas. A little crocheting, a little upholstery, a couple bags and totes, and lots of other goodies. I always enjoy playing in other mediums and seeing where it takes me. Usually, what I end with is quite different from what I started. I love that creative process and I really did not understand it until I took a sculpture class. We were working with cement. Wow! What an experience!

Men’s Preventive Health Campaign: Get Your Men Involved

This Father’s Day give the men you love the best gift of all - the gift of a healthy future.

Did you know that new research has found that men are 31 percent less likely than women to have visited a doctor within the past year?  In fact, men report making fewer routine health care appointments compared with women (56.5 percent vs. 73.8 percent).  This is so true as it took my dad to have advanced colon cancer before I took him to the ER for diagnosis.  Luckily, he lived and is in remission at age 73.  For some reason, men do not like to go to the doctors and maybe it's habit, maybe it's about being the tough guy or maybe it's fear of finding out.  Whatever the reason, they need to be seen!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Ad Council are launching a new movement on behalf of their national public serviceadvertising campaign designed to encourage middle-age men to learn which preventive medical tests they need to get and when to get them.  If you have one of those stubborn men in your life, here are some easy ways to encourage them.  By the way, tears also work as a nice guilt trip as I found out with my father!

• Send the men in your life this new e-card for Father’s Day to gently remind them:  (http://www.dadtothedoc.org)
• Ask  your husbands, fathers, brothers, etc. to take the health quiz (http://www.ahrq.gov/healthymen/quiz.htm)
• Encourage all men you know to visit ahrq.gov/healthymen, which provides recommended ages for preventive medical tests, a health care quiz designed to test knowledge ofpreventive health care, tips for talking with doctors, a glossary of consumer health terms, and links to online resources to find more medical information.  Also, keep an eye out for the new PSA's encouraging dad's to take care of their health.

Coupon Saving: Sunday's Inserts Include Great Coupons!

As I have posted, my family is on a budget since losing my job.  We must save money as my husband is in Kuwait for another 10+ months, we will be moving to a new state, selling a house, etc etc.  We embarked on this journey to save money on May 1st.  We being myself and my oldest expecting daughter as I'm hoping she will learn a lot from this.  June 1st was our official kick off to saving money and we have done fairly well for being newbies.  We saved over $150 and spent out of pocket around $145 so we did save more than we spent and we figured we have enough groceries for over a week or more plus with buying six packs of Pull Ups, they should last some time.
