Christmas Grinch Party

This year, the girls were really into the Grinch so I thought it was fitting to have a Grinch themed table at Christmas. I didn't have everything I wanted for the party as it was last minute so I had to improvise a lot such as using wrapping paper as the back drop.

For the cake, I used Rice Krispee treats to form the top of the mountain where the Grinch lives and placed it on top of a round cake.  As you can tell, I didn't have enough bottom scenery on the bottom of the cake but it looked alright.

To add a little whimsical appeal, I used a cookie cutter that matched the top of the plastic cups and cut them out when they were still hot from the oven.  I used the straws to mold the hole while hot as well to avoid crumbling the cookie later.  If I had wanted to, I could have added green food coloring to the milk but I try to avoid too much dye.

The presents and large ornaments helped to provide the Who world of whimsy as well.  The Grinch was from Build-A-Bear which is my girls' favorite place.

The tree was weighed down with a large ornament and string and the water bottle labels read WH20.  Cookies were made in the shape of presents.

Cake pops were made to look like ornaments.  My oldest made the cake pops and present shaped cookies.  If I had given her more time, she would have made them Grinch shaped.

No party is complete without handmade adorable Grinch hats from The Blue Magnolia Etsy shop who I have to say is amazing both with communication, speed and quality.

All in all, the girls enjoyed the party and although it was impromptu, they loved the decorations.  I saved them for next year where I can retry making it an even nicer party.

Let it Snow!

To say the girls were happy is an understatement with our unexpected snow storm!  The only problem is it seems every time we encounter a snow storm, one or both are sick.  Since they have chronic medical conditions, this poses a problem so I have to swoop in and make sure I'm the one who doesn't allow them too much fun by bringing them in not long after going outside.  The girls are good as both times that I let them play, they gave me no grief about coming back inside.  I'm blessed with such good girls even if they have their moments.

Pink Girls Horse Party Theme

We had a horse themed party for my granddaughter back in October and even rented a pony from El Paso Party Ponies which was a huge hit with the girls.  It took several weeks to plan and prepare and I will admit that my oldest pretty much created the party for this one.  I provided my feedback, some ideas and the costumes but for the most part, she did it all.  I'm glad I was able to instill the party bug in her and hope the rest of the girls will do this when they have children.

Continuing to Build Self-Confidence in My Children #ACTKids

Children need all the encouragement and help today to create and maintain a healthy self-confidence.  In a world increasingly becoming smaller and smaller, it's easy to get wrapped up among everyone else without realizing one's own self worth and importance.  Every person has a worth whether it's just to themselves, their family, the community or more and realizing that is key to being a parent.  I have found that encouraging self-confidence starts with me and with that, I have an obligation to ensure I foster that within each of my children.  Applying self-confidence reinforcements can be easy with easy steps.

1. One of the easiest ways to set a good example that will last a lifetime is to encourage healthy eating, proper exercising and rest.  When a child is packing in good food, getting much needed exercise and rest, their bodies and mind will show it. We are a society based on looks and even if it's unfair, a fit child can feel more confident.  Not only is it an appearance factor but with the proper nutrition and rest, an alert mind may open up the ability to learn more versus being tired and sluggish.
2. A healthy smile is another key in promoting self-confidence.  Again, we are a society focused on the whitest of white teeth and by incorporating good dental hygiene, we can help them achieve healthy white teeth. We are a Crest 3D and Act Anticavity mouthwash family.  My girls know how important a white smile is let alone the advantages of taking care of teeth to avoid dental work.  Cavities are not fun so why not try to be proactive versus having to endure the pain of repairing those teeth?
3. I'm a firm believer in daily compliments whether it's telling my children they are beautiful, smart, funny, caring or giving.  It is key in developing a self identity that is positive and nurturing.  Positive reinforcement is one that I use based on growing up without it.  I think children and adults still need to hear good things and without it, I truly feel it can hamper self-confidence.
4. A sense of excellent is also worth encouraging.  Being your best balanced with reasonable expectations also adds to self-confidence in my opinion.  When a child is taught to give it their all and to finish what they start, it invokes pride which turns around to confidence.  I know there is a fine line that you don't want to apply too much pressure for perfection rather you want to instill a 'your best' mentality.
5. Knowledge is power and the more one knows, the more confident they can be among others. I'm a firm believer in reading and feel so much knowledge and confidence can be achieved by reading.  

There are many things parents and others can do to encourage and promote self-confidence among children.  From the simplest of acts to more complex, we can foster a healthy environment that will continue to grow with our children from youth to adulthood while hopefully passing it down to the next generation.  The acts of promoting self-confidence aren't only reserved for children but are things that most of us can use.  A healthy body, mind and smile can go a long way and is essential to many facets of our lives but especially for self-confidence.
