The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown by Claire Ridgeway Book Review

I'm a big history fan of the British monarchy and that could be because I love history and/or I'm half English.  I have always taken a keen interest in historical events but within the past year or so, have taken a liking to British monarchs.  From what started with Queen Elizabeth and then a turn to Queen Victoria, I became fascinated with King Henry VIII.  I must confess that those interests originated with the movies Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Young Victoria and then The Other Boleyn Girl.  Upon that, I started watching some episodes of The Tudors to get a firmer grasp on King Henry's life and his women.  I started reading books to further acquaint myself with Anne Boleyn and found this book The Fall of Anne Boleyn: A Countdown to be of great interest.


Anne Boleyn was a complex person that was portrayed a little different in the Other Boleyn Girl played by Natalie Portman.  This book, The Fall of Anne Boleyn:  A Countdown is an account of the days leading up to Anne's execution.  From the rise and fall, it details many counts of what happened and possibly why it happened.  I liked that the author, Claire Ridgway, made comparisons of differences from what was displayed in The Tudors or The Other Boleyn Girl versus reality.  Her commentary provides more insight to the details while citing sources for the conclusions presented.  It provided a credible account due to the author's insightful research and dedication to the Tudor family.  Learning more about the critical players involved in Anne's rise and fall was also intriguing. The book provides a summary of the whereabouts of the major players post Anne's execution as well as how Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth fell back into their rightful places for the throne.


Overall, an excellent account of the days leading up to Anne's execution, backed by extensive research and thorough author commentary.

Mamavation Monday: Food Cravings

This week's Mamavation Mom question is why do we crave food cravings.  I think the answer can be many reasons ranging from it being a comfort food, to the forbidden food to the additives that are included to make it crave-able.  I've often read about franken sugars like Aspartame having addictive qualities which makes you crave more.  I think foods such as salty, sweet and/or carb laden foods are a basic want we were probably conditioned into liking as we grew and that habit extended into our adult lives.  They might even be hormonal or maybe even seasonal.  The possibilities are endless in my opinion but I know I have those cravings periodically if not daily.  It's one of my struggles I live constantly.


This week, I did much better and I expected to gain weight but was surprised at how post our trip to Sea World and the elimination of soda and eating a bit healthier, I started to lose what I picked up over the weekend.  I'm still not running but I did ride the bike a lot.  Today, I worked off 400+ calories and tried to ride after I ate.  I've had a sinus infection or something that won't go away and I've been terribly fatigued coupled with insomnia so the will to run is out the door for now.  All in all, a good week and hope to continue to choose healthier foods and watch the scale go down a bit more.

Having a Soda stream seltzer water maker is awesome! As a child, we would have a case of seltzer water bottles delivered to our home along with flavored syrup. This went away with the growth of canned soda. But now the seltzer water method is back in our life! We just fill our reusable plastic bottle with tap water push the button to carbonate with our soda stream maker then add some of the many flavors. We have tried at least 30 different flavors to date and have not been disappointed yet! We no longer have to buy 3+ cases of soda a week from the grocery store. Mamavation Monday

I've not been doing too well with focusing on getting healthier this past week.  My oldest and her baby left this past weekend after we made a trip down to San Antonio's Sea World.  Instead of drinking water in the very hot and humid Texas sun, I drank a lot of soda which is not normal for me.  For some reason, water was not quenching the thirst and I had that nagging sore throat feeling.  I did try to not over indulge in eating and even skipped desert at dinner both nights.  Needless to say, with all the soda drinking, I picked up a few pounds.  I can look at food and gain weight so it's not a huge deal as I know I can get rid of it pretty quickly.  


My goal is to cut out about another 10 pounds and I'd be content.  I mostly need to just eat healthier and do more exercising.  I was running four miles a day until my daughter visited and I lost the will. I think it was mostly due to the fact I have to run when I have optimal energy and as an insomniac, that is hit or miss.  I never wanted to tell her to go upstairs with my grand daughter so I could use the treadmill so I would wait and lose the will.  I struggle with the stress eating quite a bit and feel it's directly tied to the insomnia issues.  


At the end of the day, it's a new day and I have learned to not kick myself when I don't live up to my goals as at least if I retry, it's okay.  It's okay for me at least.  I used to live in that destructive cycle of eating, getting mad, eating more, getting madder and hating myself over it.  I have learned that if I fall off, I pick myself back up and retry.  Much healthier!


This week's Mamavation question was what can you do as a parent to help your child lose weight and start living healthy lifestyle?  I think it starts plain and simply as living by example.  We live a healthy life, they live a healthy life and it has to be balanced with the good, the bad and the ugly.  I see too many kids going hog wild when out of their environment whenever they are in a strict upbringing and this holds true for junk or bad food.  Moderation is the key and by offering healthy choices, empowering our kids is the key to making good choices.
