George Rogers Clark Memorial in Indiana

Every state has its own treasures and it's fun to find them.  I have lived in many states but my favorite will be Indiana given the amount of time I have called Indiana home.  I was born there, raised there, spend most of my adult hood there and am looking forward to calling it home again.  Part of my family makes Indiana their home as well.  My parents and sister live in southern Indiana and my brother lives in northern Indiana.  Northern Indiana is special to me because I grew up there but southern Indiana is also special due to many memories.  A few week's ago, I was able to visit my family and my usual trek includes stopping at some of the sites such as the George Rogers Clark Memorial.  

 

 

 

 

This national park site was built in 1936, if memory serves me correctly, and pays homage to a man who should be celebrated and remembered more.  George Rogers Clark was a trailblazer fighting for our country during a time where we were still building our country.  He was involved in many battles and took back Fort Sackville from the British.  He's the overlooked brother of the other infamous Clark.

I love Indiana history and could go on and on but I won't.  I wanted to share our pictures.  The girls had so much fun visiting.  The one thing I will note, we went to a park that had plaques and one was incorrect in it's information of George Rogers Clark by imprinting his name incorrectly.  One would think that historical markers could be accurate especially when that person was so monumental to the area.

Back to School with Milk Unleashed Four Pack Giveaway 9/15 - US

It is back to school time and I was surprised to find out some kids don't go back until September which is how it was when I was a kid way, way back then.  When the kids are outside of our reach, we aren't always sure they are making the best choices.  Granted schools are stepping up to the plate and eliminating bad choices such as soda but some choices just aren't available.  I've even heard of some schools eliminating chocolate milk.  I think that's stretching it as I feel milk provides a great source of Vitamin D and whether it's chocolate or white, it shouldn't be limited. I do love technology and the idea of taking milk on the go as I am a milk drinker as evident by the purchase of two gallons every week.  My family is a family of milk drinkers as well which makes me happy as I am not an advocate of giving kids soda routinely.  Milk Unleashed has this cool app (see below) that has on-the-go games and snacks, milk unleashed tips and a quiz to test your knowledge.





Not all kids like milk as my sister was one of them and my youngest is starting to relike it.  She was a milk hound as a child but great out of it until lately.   This app has some great tips on trying to get your kid to drink more milk as who doesn't need more calcium in their diet?  Here are just a few:

• Change the color with food coloring as we all know kids love colored food!
• Use milk in oatmeal instead of water.  I always make my oatmeal this way because it tastes richer and is creamier.  
• Add a spoon of honey for those honey fans out there.
• Make a smoothie with a glass of milk and their favorite fruit.

No Kid Hungry® Teachers Report #NoKidHungry #hunger #education

It's no surprise that many children are going hungry given the state of our economy over the last few years but what is surprising is that more isn't being done.  I find it appalling that even one child goes to school hungry, goes home hungry or goes to bed hungry.  No child should ever go hungry and when it happens in the United States, it's really disheartening given our reputation as a leader.  A new report called the Teachers Report provides insight based on a survey of public school teachers from around the nation about hunger in the classroom as well as their thoughts on possible solutions.  Here are the startling findings:

• A majority of teachers say “most” or “a lot” of their students rely on school meals as their primary source of nutrition.
• More than 75% of teachers say that the U.S. should make childhood hunger a “top” or “high” priority.
• A majority of teachers say they have kids in their classes who regularly come to school hungry. 80% of those who see hungry kids say these children are coming to school hungry at least once a week.
• More than 8 in 10 teachers say breakfast helps students concentrate, contributes to better academic performance and leads to healthier students with fewer headaches and fewer stomach aches.

I know I keep writing post after post at how I can't believe it's already back to school time.  I knew that time flew when you became older but I had no idea it would pass through at warp speed.  I think back to school time is a fun event for kids and can be for a parent if you don't have to worry about how you will be able to afford it all.  Between the money and how busy we are all, it can be hard to get organized.  I have found some great ideas and by looking at Back to School with Tiny Prints ideas.

Having a child with allergies, I find the Allergy Alert Cards to be especially handy.  I like that they are cute and fun and bring attention to what can be a serious consequence if not taken serious.  The other item I also love are the Lunch Box Notes.  When my oldest was in school, I would make my own hand made notes to sneak in her lunch and with these, they are quick, cute and handy.  What better way to bring a smile to their face than a note from mom?

As your children head back to school, there really are some great back to school products at TinyPrints.  They also have a wonderful array of cards, invitations, gifts and more.  It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas either.

Teaching Good Oral Health the Fun Way #CompleteCare

Nothing shows healthiness than a nice bright smile at least in my opinion.  I struggled at first to get my little one's to brush until they were able to see how powerful not brushing can look on teeth.  I've always been a stickler to nice white teeth and have tried many products on my pursuit of such.  I often look for the latest and greatest to keep my girls inspired not only for looks but just for health.  I don't want them being like their grandparents who have no teeth and lost their teeth at an early age.  Flossing is another big chore for them in spire of telling them how important it is to floss.  Recent studies have pointed out that regular flossing helps to improve life expectancy since it decreased the likelihood of gum disease and heart disease.


When I tried to teach them about flossing, it was hard for my youngest to grip the floss thread so she essentially gave up.  She is a hot head and sometimes, I have to choose my battles.  My nine year old was okay with it but she was making her gums bleed at times by not being able to use it correctly.  We tried the floss sticks that have it pre-arranged for easier use and they were okay but it was just a routine task that became boring rather quickly.  When I tried the Waterpik Water Flosser for Kids, everything changed. 

This really cool way to clean teeth was fun and exciting!  It was easy now to convince them that flossing is not enough and that this new way to floss was definitely 1000 times more fun.  Getting children engaged also means making things more personalized and fun.  They took great pride in making their Water Flosser for Kids just their own with enclosed "cool" stickers.
