12 Pearls of Christmas: Gifts of Purpose Three Strand Pearl Necklace Giveaway

Too Precious to Wear
by Sarah Sundin

One Christmas when my mother was a girl, she received a string of pearls from her father. Since her parents were divorced-an unusual situation in the 1950s-she treasured the pearls as a sign of her father's love. When he passed away her senior year in high school, the pearls took on even greater significance.

When I was growing up, my mother talked often about the pearls, but my sister and I never saw them. Mom kept them safe in their silk-lined velvet box tucked in her jewelry box. For dressy occasions, she wore other nice jewelry, but never the pearls.

The pearls were too precious to wear.

What if the strand broke and even a single pearl was lost? What if the clasp broke and she lost them forever? She couldn't risk it. Better to keep them cocooned in silky security.

When my mother offered to let me wear her pearls on my wedding day, I was deeply touched. This was more than "something old" or "something borrowed," but a sign that she trusted me and loved me.

A few days before the wedding, my mother pulled the box from seclusion. My sister and I watched with curiosity and awe.

The pearls had turned a deep grayish-yellow, they were flaking, and some had fallen apart.

They were fake.

For over thirty years, my mother nurtured a piece of costume jewelry. All that time she could have worn them and enjoyed them without worry. Her father gave them to her for a purpose-to wear them and feel lovely and ladylike and special. He didn't mean for her to hide them away.

On our wedding day, my husband gave me a strand of real pearls. They symbolize my husband's sacrificial love for me-they were expensive for a graduate student with half-Scottish blood.

I vowed never to tuck them away but to wear them often. Yes, I'm careful. I inspect the cord and knots and clasp, and I plan to have them restrung when necessary. But I wear them and enjoy them. That's why my husband gave them to me.

Our heavenly Father gives us gifts too-brilliant and costly. We should cherish them, but we should use them. Whether our individual gifts involve serving, teaching, encouragement, evangelism, or even money-they have a purpose. The Lord wants us to use our gifts to bless others and to spread the message of His love.

While pearls make women look lovely, using our God-given gifts for His kingdom makes us even lovelier. And just as pearls grow more lustrous with frequent wear, our gifts from God grow in beauty and strength the more we use them.

This Christmas I plan to wear my string of pearls, a sign of my husband's love-and to display my pearls from heaven, a sign of my Father's love.

Have a lustrous Christmas!

Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter Review

Over 4,000 years ago, the Mayas in Central and South America used chocolate.  It was later introduced to Europe in the 1500's and was reinvented into a creamy, sweet delicacy.  It was in 1852, Domingo Ghirardelli opened his first chocolate factory and the rest is history.  Ghirardelli Chocolate ... need I say more?

They make some of the best chocolate around and being a self-proclaimed chocoholic, you can trust me on that one if you have never had the delight.  My husband is not a chocolate lover, I have no idea how that is even possible, but even he loves Ghirardelli Chocolate.  I was more than happy to participate in the new campaign from Shespeaks.com when they offered the delicious chance to try out Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter.

Shespeaks provided a nice little gift pack of their ever classy and elegantly wrapped chocolates along with six $1.50 off coupons that I'm wanting to share with anyone who wants them (until I run out).  Interested?  Just send me an e-mail at staying_younger@yahoo.com.  I'm not a huge peanut butter chocolate fan and was going to give this to my daughter who is an avid chocolate/peanut butter lover but I succumbed to the late night cravings and noisely unwrapped one.  I was trying to be quiet but I couldn't.  I was pleasantly surprised by the typical indulgance of the creamy milk chocolate but not only was there peanut butter but a delightful surprise crunchy roasted peanuts perfected each bite.  To me, the crunchy peanut pieces was the icing on the cake that made me craving for more.  I did stop at one as I am trying to get in shape but I do not regret it.

A nice thing about Ghirardelli Chocolate us the pieces are individually wrapped which makes it a nice snack size without overindulging. Ghirardelli lives up to the usual reputation we have grown accustomed to which is creating this incredibly tasting amazing product.  If you like or love peanut butter, you will love this!

Click HERE to shop online as it's not too late to order for Christmas!  Don't forget to sign up for the Chocomail to receive the latest on news and events, promotions, recipes and entertaining essentials.

Here is a great recipe made with Ghirardelli Chocolate compliments of their site:

Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cheesecake Bars

  • 2 ounce(s) Milk Chocolate Baking Bar
  • 1/2 cup(s) Sweet Ground Chocolate and Cocoa
  • 2 cup(s) crushed graham crackers for crust
  • 1/2 cup(s) melted butter for crust
  • 2 tablespoon(s) granulated white sugar for crust
  • 16 ounce(s) cream cheese, at room temperature, for cheesecake layer
  • 1 cup(s) granulated white sugar for cheesecake layer
  • 1/2 cup(s) creamy peanut butter for cheesecake layer
  • 3 tablespoon(s) all-purpose flour for cheesecake layer
  • 4 large eggs for cheesecake layer
  • 1/2 cup(s) whole milk for cheesecake layer
  • 1 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract for cheesecake layer
  • 1/2 teaspoon(s) solid vegetable shortening for cheesecake layer
Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. To make the crust, combine the crushed graham crackers, ground chocolate, butter, and sugar in a large bowl until well blended. Press the mixture onto the bottom of an ungreased 9 by 13-inch baking pan. Bake for 8 minutes, and then transfer to a wire rack and let cool.

While the crust cools, make the cheesecake layer. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sugar, peanut butter, and flour with an electric mixer at low speed until well blended. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in the milk and vanilla. Pour the filling into the crust. Bake for 40 minutes, or until just set. Place the pan on a wire rack and let cool completely. Melt the milk chocolate and vegetable shortening in the top of a double boiler, or in a heatproof bowl, over barely simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the cooled bars. Chill for approximately 10 minutes, just until the chocolate layer is partially set. Score the chocolate layer with a sharp knife, forming 2-inch squares (approximately), and return the pan to the refrigerator. Chill for 30 minutes, or until firm. Cut through the bars and serve. Store tightly covered in the refrigerator.

Disclaimer:  I received a sample pack of Ghirardelli Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter from Shespeaks.  The review is based solely on my opinions and I was not financially compensated or compensated in any other way other than the free sample pack and six $1.50 coupons.

Here is a little more about about www.episencial.com:

We are first and foremost a skin care company.

Episencial skin care products are based upon clinically effective formulas and technologies relied on by skin care professionals in spas and clinics for more than thirty years. Our products are designed to support the skin’s role in the body’s immune system to promote health and wellness as well as beauty.

But we are also parents.

Episencial was created because our founder, Kim Walls – a skin care expert from the Epicuren family – couldn’t find products for her young sons that met her standards. So, she created the products she – and other green parents – wanted:
  • high quality skin care that is affordable
  • for the most sensitive skin of young children ages 0 to five
  • made exclusively with all natural ingredients; the majority of which are organic
  • no unhealthy chemicals, ever manufactured under solar power
  • beautifully packaged in recycled and sustainable materials featuring art that inspires
  • smell terrific using juice extracts – not fragrances
And we believe in the Vivid Green Generation.

Kids learn to take care of themselves at bath time in a fun and familiar way. Take that teachable moment and expand it to the care and cleansing of the planet and you’ve got the makings of something powerful — a Vivid Green Generation. Our kids will be the generation that takes environmentalism from a trendy cause and marketing gimmick to a cultural and corporate norm. We can help them make that happen. Because actively healthy can and should be fun. With Episencial products you can begin to instill green values from day one. Sharing these fun and inviting products — and the care and consideration that goes into making them — with your children can serve as a building block for making actively healthy choices for themselves and the planet. We have been extremely fortunate to showcase like-minded artists; famed photographer Anne Geddes for our professional Epicuren Baby line and celebrated children’s author Eric Carle for the new Episencial products, so you and your children can enjoy them with all of your senses.

Dr. Mao's Tips for Curbing Gray Naturally

What a great article Yahoo's Health segment had today on graying hair attributed to stress and overwork.  He utilizes the current and past Presidents as examples at how quickly their hair turns gray and after thinking about it, it only makes sense about the stress and being overworked.  Here is an excerpt from the full article and link:

Dr. Mao's Secrets of Longevity

by Dr. Maoshing Ni a Yahoo! Health Expert for Alternative Medicine

It seems that the U.S. Presidency comes with an unpleasant side effect: gray hair. Less than one year into his term, President Obama's hair has turned visibly gray. It happened to his many predecessors, too. Did you know that the condition of your hair actually reveals a lot about the level of stress in your life? Chinese medicine attributes many hair issues to a decline in your vital essence, brought on by stress, overwork, physical and emotional strain, an unhealthy lifestyle, and too much alcohol.

While stress reduction is at the forefront of most of our minds these days, what can you do if your hair woes are already showing up on your head? Read on to find out the best ways to remedy graying hair, hair loss, and dandruff, and learn how to get a shiny, healthy head of hair!

Here are recommendations for graying hair:

Eat for hair health. The Chinese have long discovered that black sesame seeds, black beans, and walnuts reverse graying. For healthy and shiny hair, eat foods everyday that are rich in essential fatty acids and omega-rich nutrients: flaxseed oil, sesame oil, olive oil, virgin coconut oil, avocado, beans, nuts and seeds.

Chinese herbs for graying hair. "Shou wu" (also called "fo-ti" or polygonum root) is a hair nurture supplement available in Asian herb stores, used to restore hair growth and reverse graying. Rich in vitamin E and the B-complex vitamins, Shou wu has many other health benefits: It supports healthy estrogen profiles in women, stimulates red blood cell production, builds your immune system, maintains healthy cholesterol levels, and improves intestinal regularity.

Color your hair naturally. If you want to dye your hair, use the following natural colorants: Henna works well for shades of light brown and red, coffee or black tea may be used by brunettes, and chamomile and lemon juice can color light hair.

The Fall Line: A Tale of Old Jamestown by Errol Burland Book Review

Product Details:

  • Paperback: 512 pages
  • Publisher: Dorrance Publishing Co. Inc. (November 1, 2006)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0805971939
  • ISBN-13: 978-0805971934
I received THE FALL LINE:  A Tale of Old Jamestown to review as a member of the Dorrance Review TeamTHE FALL LINE: A Tale of Old Jamestown by Errol Burland, is set in the 1600's that details the lives of Lyn Duke, John Grey and Nat Bacon who uproot from Suffolk, England in 1660 to Virginia.  Lyn and Nathanial are neighbors who marry and take along their good friend John to this fertile, dangerous new land. The destiny sought by these three is one of peace and comfort but due to the early age of this colony, fights among Indians and other conflicts thrown their way, they quickly learn it's not all they dreamed of.

The characters are well developed and include Nat's cousin, an affluent tobacco plantation owner, who welcomes the three to Virginia.  Along the way they meet and befriend other influential men and learn that a deep seeded divide is approaching.  The two factions, the Green Spring and the Ring divide the colony and force the emigants to choose.  Nat chooses the group that opposes the governor which is in direct conflict to his cousin who has significant ties to the governor.  The story details Nat's bestowed appointment to lead the Ring against the Indians and then against the Green Spring to the eventual charge of being a traitor to the King of England.

Nat becomes knowns as General Bacon and thus the story details Bacon's Rebellion.  It's a detailed, engrossing depiction of the political strife that was wide spread in colonial Virginia through the eyes of a few.  One ends up feeling remorse for Lyn who loses so much on this path that turned out much different than expected.

The author, Errol Burland, definitely set the book up with dysfunctional families which adds to the ability to relate and sympathize with the characters:
“I tried to bring a lot of what I learned about dysfunctional families into the book,” says Burland. “I certainly learned a lot of psychology. I worked with a lot of psychologists and therapists, wonderful people.” After completing the research phase of the book, Burland began assembling the stories that had been simmering in her mind. “I generally work in the afternoon. I like to clear the day, take care of all the business, and hopefully get some exercise and have a clean mind and just sit down and write, whether I want to or not.”

- - Nelson County Life, goodreads, February 2007
I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels given the great historical detail present as well as seeing the human component suffered during war and conflict. It's a great book!

Review of Customized Christmas Ornaments from CafePress: Easy & Affordable

Need a quick, easy yet wonderful personalized idea for Christmas?  CafePress has a great feature for creating personalized ornaments that takes under five minutes to create and purchase.  Okay, it takes longer when you have to choose among the many templates available or you can just have a picture without any features.  I make it a tradition to select ornaments each year to make the year special and to provide my girls with a sending off when they are old enough to have their own tree once they move out.  I'm really picky and although I cannot comment on the quality of the product, I wanted to get this post out there since time is ticking and Christmas will be here before we know it.  The earlier you buy, the cheaper the shipping.

I was provided an opportunity by Amy at BSMMedia and CafePress to review the ornaments.  I jumped at the chance as I do have a CafePress account so I am familar with the quality of products and have used them to create some of my husband's going away or coming home parties post a deployment.  What sets CafePress apart from other businesses is the volume of unique items you can create.  Whether it's a cup, a card, a shirt or even boxer shorts, you can create just about anything.  Of course, I couldn't constraint myself as I purchased an additional ornament and a coffee travel mug.

Within 10 minutes, I uploaded the various photos and selected different templates and shapes as you can choose between circles and ovals. Once you select and adjust your photo, you review and if you like it, put it in your cart.  It was the easist project I have ever created.  One thing to note, you need to ensure your photo is ready to go as there is no editing option other than reducing or increasing the photo's size and you can move it up, down, to the right or to the left. If your photo isn't ready to go, you will need to take the time to perform that action.

I did purchase the travel mug because it was different.  It's ceramic with a stainless steel top that adds a look of elegance to it.  My husband loves these mugs for his commute and I'm sure it will be a favorite for his deployment in May.  The only limitation is you don't have a choice for picture location and you can only add one photo.  I would like to see more options with the photo choices and placements but I still think it looks great.  I cannot comment on the quality yet but as soon as I receive them, I will update the post.  Another plus with CafePress are the shipping charges are much cheaper then Zazzle.

I didn't purchase the water bottle but I wanted to see how it looks and as you can see with the picture above, that is only a sample of choices available.  There are many templates and photo choices.  Don't forget with CafePress, you can also choose to purchase from the creations of all the other shops that are out there.  There are some really talented people selling their work!

In addition, CafePress has a specific ornament designer they have created for their partner Autism Speaks. Cafepress will give an additional 10% of revenue from these ornament sales to Autism Speaks, dedicated to helping kids with Autism. This is a different designer tool with different templates which can be found at http://www.cafepress.com/designer/ornament/index.aspx?theme=autism.

LATCH Child Passenger Safety Awareness

With the holiday season moving into full swing, families across the country are in the car and on the go. Whether you?re driving across the country to visit family or across town to holiday shop, it is important that your child passengers are riding safely and that child safety seats are used correctly.

AAA estimated that 30 million people travelled this Thanksgiving holiday alone (http://media.aaachicago.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=143 ), and for many this is just the beginning of the holiday hustle and bustle. Now is the time to utilize the Child Car Safety tools (http://childcarsafety.adcouncil.org) provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Ad Council to learn more about proper car seat use and installation. You will find informative resources that include instructional videos.

Have child passenger safety questions that you need answered before you travel over the river and through the woods to Grandma's? NHTSA is always available to answer your questions online through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/childpassengersafety) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/childseatsafety).

Tis the Season But That's Not the Only Reason

I spent time over the year giving back because I do have the good fortune of having an Army Officer husband and I work as well.  Throughout the year, I have donated three of my daughter's clothing to a church and also FreeCycled in hopes of those clothes going to needy people.  This past summer, we gave a host of baby products such as walkers, bouncy chairs and many other things to a needy pregnant couple.  We then gave away an almost new washer and dryer to the same neighbor who is a minister in a small church in South Carolina.  It's a great feeling to help others in need especially when you have been given good blessings.  TwitterMoms and Robeez wants to know how you and I are giving back this holiday season.

This Christmas, I have adopted a child from the Angel Tree, I have provided presents for my elderly, fixed income parents to give to their grandkids, I have sponsored a couple of my own blog giveaways in hopes it's going to someone who really needs the help, I'm writing Santa letters for my daughter's class and expanding it to the siblings as I learned one child's father is in Iraq and another is fighting injuries sustained in the war and has been away for two years recovering from his children.  We have yet to sort through the old toys to give those away which most are like new and some still have tags.

This is a great way to spread the desire to help others.  Stride Rite Children's Group, part of the Stride Rite unit of Collective Brands, Inc., markets the leading brand of premium children's footwear in the United States under such brands as Stride Rite®, Saucony® Kids, Sperry Top-Sider® Kids, Keds® Kids, Robeez® and among others. For 90 years, the company’s passion for excellence in design has been focused on ensuring the proper development of children’s feet with a commitment to innovation, research and technology.

What I like about Robeez is the fact that Robeez will donate a pair of soft sole shoes to K.I.D.S. with every soft sole purchased through December 23rd and link to: http://www.robeez.com/EN-US/seasonofgiving.htm.

My favorite holiday shoe is the classic patent black shoes.   There is just something about Mary Janes and how elegant and classy they look.  The great thing is they are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

These are also my favorite. The Robeez Cozy Ankle Booties - tan in color are the ultimate in comfort, this plush ankle bootie is so warm and cozy that your little eskimo will want to wear them day and night, indoors and out.

Whatever the reason, it's always good to give back wherever you can.  Whether it's cash, new items, food or used items, someone needs something.  This is a great thought provoking blog request and I hope everyone embraces the challenge to think about what you are doing to give back.  If you are one of the one's in need, may your wishes be answered and good time start to follow.

Thanks TwitterMoms and Robeez for this great opportunity to spread the word.

Have you entered any of my giveaways?   Get five bonus entries for each and every giveaway you enter for telling me in this post what you have done this Christmas season or will do to help someone else!
