GourmetGiftBaskets.com and Gourmet Excellence Review & Giveaway 4/21

Gift Baskets
If you are an avid blogger giveaway person, you have seen other giveaways for GourmetGiftBaskets.com.  If you are one of the lucky ones, you have won or you found out what a great company they are for gifts to your family and friends and special occasions.  What I like about GourmetGiftBaskets.com, is the incredible selection of gift baskets but did you know that they also have amazing baked goods?  I didn't know either until I joined in for this delicious review and giveaway for a brownie sampler.  I confess that I'm a huge brownie fan ... almost as big as my obsession with Johnny Depp.  I know a good brownie and haven't had a good brownie in some time.

To be honest, I was a bit skeptic because I keep getting let down on a delicious, stop you in your track brownie that I didn't think they would deliver.  I was immediately corrected.  I received the box of six fresh flavors and then the problem hit me.  Which one do I eat?  Do I eat them all?  Do I share them to have more feedback?  Oh, so many decisions!  I thought about it for a brief second as I broke open the Belgian Chocolate Chunk brownie as it was begging me to choose him.  I poured a glass a milk and took a bite and it was truly heavenly.  Moist, rich but not overly rich, chocolatey and truly decadent (by the way, my oldest dislikes that word after watching a chocolate baking show use it in every sentence).  This was one of the very best brownies I ever ate and was certainly the best one I had ate in a very long time.  I shared one bite with my youngest.  I ate the rest without advertising it because I wanted it all to myself.  Yeah, I know, I'm stingy but I did share two with them so they were able to pick which one's they wanted.

My sampler included:

  • Belgian Chocolate Chunk
  • White Chocolate Macadamia Blonde
  • Butterscotch Blonde
  • Cheesecake
  • Peanut Butter
  • Fudge Walnut

Next on the chopping block was the Cheesecake brownie.  Again, full of robust chocolate flavor with a hint of cheesecake.  I like a strong cheesecake flavor but this was amazing!  Again, fresh and moist and if I had popped it in the microwave for a few seconds, I wouldn't have been able to tell it wasn't fresh out of my kitchen.  The sizes are amazing too!  You really could share this, eat as two snacks or be like me and devour and savoir it all at once.  Next was the White Chocolate Macadamia Blonde brownie.  If you like or love macadamia nuts, you will love this!  The flavor of the nuts are perfect and I don't recall a bite that I didn't have a piece of the macadamia nuts and they were whole nuts.  The white chocolate was subtle and altogether, a perfect gourmet mix.  My youngest tried the Fudge Walnut and all I heard was "mmmm" and "yummy!"

The Peanut Butter brownie was next and as you can see in the photo above, they are good sized and after I cut it, you can see the moist inside because it stuck to the knife.  Every brownie was fresh, moist and delicious.

Now for the giveaway, one reader will receive the same sampler as I did of one each of the six varieties.

To enter, please use the Rafflecopter form.  Due to the brownies being perishable goods, the giveaway is only valid for those in the lower 48 states (sorry!).

$25 Amazon GC Giveaway 4/18

Can you believe spring is finally upon us?  I dislike cold weather so much and cannot wait until warmer weather prevails.  If some of you notice, I write sponsored posts and I suspect my page rank took a hit for it but the money I make from the sponsored posts, is the money I use to giveaway to my readers.  When I'm in a slump and don't want to reach out to businesses, which is most of the time, I just giveaway the money I earn and try to help some of my favorite small businesses with new followers.  This giveaway is no different.

One reader will win a $25 Amazon Gift Card.

Natural House Probiotic Cleaning Products Review & Giveaway 4/3

I don't know about you but the more things are being uncovered on the internet the scarier the news is.  I've been moving towards a healthier existence mostly for my children's health and as I get older, I want to ensure I'm around a bit longer.  Gone are the days that you would trust a brand or a product in being safe.  Gone are the days of having no idea what might be in a product which is why I've moved over to the organic or natural realm of living.  I can admit that I haven't fully embraced it as in many ways, I can't always afford it but when I can, I do.  I also look for products that won't trigger my youngest's unknown pulmonary condition.  The wrong thing can trip her off and away we go to the emergency room.  So when I learned about Natural House probiotic cleaning products, I wanted to give them a try.  I received three of their products complimentary to try out for a month.   Flushy, Trashy and Sinky.

porduct-sinky-01  product-trashy product-flushy-01

What is unique or revolutionary with Natural House probiotic cleaning products in that it's a new way to clean.  The non-toxic, probiotic cleaning agents are strong enough to clean yet are safe for everyone in your house.  If you are like me, you might have a highly sensitive one so this is perfect.  The products are eco-friendly in that there will be no harsh chemicals dumped into the wastewater supply and it creates an odor eating ecosytem to naturally drive out the odors at the source.  They are plant-based ingredients furthering the eco-friendly benefit of the Natural House product line.

Sinky and Flushy work by breaking down and digesting fats, oils, grease and other solid wastes to keep the drains, pipes and disposal working better.  If you have have a septic tank, it might benefit that as well.  Not convinced yet?  Natural House even won the Retailers' Choice Award at the 2011 National Hardware show.

I used all three of my products and they did a great job cleaning, didn't leave a residue nor any harmful fumes.  I did notice the smell from the disposal side of the sink immediately vanished after using Sinky per the instructions.  The garbage can, which usually has minimal odors because it's emptied frequently, has no odor and looks spotless after cleaning with Trashy.  Flushy did it's job too.  Each are all very easy to use and I liked how the Sinky packs are drop, run water and let the magic begin.  All very easy to use!  I like how it leaves behind plant based enzymes to stay behind to keep fighting odors.   Overall, I liked the products and would recommend.

The have other natural household cleaning products such as for counters, glass and mops.

You can watch this cute 2 minute video to learn more about Natural House probiotic cleaners.

To learn more, just check out Natural House's site here or on Facebook and Twitter.

Newman's Own Organics Review and Giveaway 4/15

Newman's Own Organics
I love organic products and anything I can do to choose something healthier is right up there on my 'to do' list.  I've also been a fan of Newman's Own but when I found out about Newman's Own Organics, I was ready to check out the second generation of products.  I saw an episode of Martha Steward interviewing Nell and her fond memories of her father, actor Paul Newman.  It was intriguing to hear her talk about the business and how she got started and how her father influenced her.  Martha even shared in some of her favorite memories.

I received a very generous complimentary box of various Newman's Own Organics products to try.  There was something for everyone.  I gravitated towards the Orange Chocolate Chip cookies that had a nice orange fragrance but chocolate that was very rich and decadent.  You could not tell that there was anything different about these organic cookies except I thought they tasted better.  Each bite sized cookies are also perfect if you are watching your calorie intake given the size.   It's just enough to satisfy that chocolate craving but not overly big to indulge too much.  Five cookies were only 150 calories and as with all products, the ingredients are listed.   In case you were wondering, all of the Newman's Own Organics' product are certified organic by Oregon Tilth.

Certified organic by Oregon Tilth. Ingredients have been grown on farms that have not used artificial fertilizers or pesticides for three years or more. The farms and processors have been certified by an independent third party. Kosher certification by Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, 333 Seventh Avenue, New York.

My girls were fans of the pretzels which had the perfect crunch factor and the pretzel taste that pretzel loves enjoy.  They also loved the Alphabet Chocolate Cookies.  They were powerful little chocolaty cookies that I love seeing my girls enjoy.  I'd much rather have them indulging in organic foods versus overly processed, preservative laden foods.  Fig Newmans are also a favorite of mine and they were light and fluffy with a robust fig taste inside.  The mints are fantastic and were light and packed the perfect punch.  Not overly strong but just right.  I will confess that I was not a fan of the Ginger Snaps but my husband was.  He took them along with the various flavors of Licorice on an Army trip yesterday and is fully enjoying all of them.  We both agree that there is nothing lacking with the organic version of each of the products we received.  My husband is anti-anything good for you so to hear that he actually enjoyed them, was a huge testimonial in the taste as he only like what is bad for you.

Whether you made that switch to organics or not, Newman's Own Organics are the route to go.  With so many choices to choose from, they have all your snacking needs taken care of.  I hope to see more foods like entrees eventually.  The quality is exceptional along with the taste.

They also have pet food and organic coffee!

The Giveaway:

One reader will get to win a prize pack of their own:  1 package of Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies, 1 package of Alphabet Chocolate Cookies, 1 tin of Peppermint Mints and 1 package of Hint O' Mint Newman-O's Cookies!

Looney Tunes ClickN Read Phonics Review

I'm homeschooling my children and have found that a bit of variety can go a long way.  My girls have been exposed to a few phonics program and whereas most have been myself teaching them phonics, they loved the chance to try it out online with some of their favorite cartoon characters such as Looney Tunes.  I was unsure how receptive they would be but after seeing how much they loved the mini cartoons in between the lessons and how they enjoyed them, I was comforted in knowing they have an option to learn while enjoying it.  Looney Tunes Phonics is based on the "world's most advanced reading program, ClickN Read Phonics."

With your favorite delightful Looney Tunes characters, your child will experience little cartoon shorts and will be entertained by the interaction with the lessons.  The lessons are geared towards the age and knowledge of the child.  The audible is easy to understand which was important to me as I have experienced other programs that didn't have easy to hear audible.  Even when the lesson is loading, they will have variations in the different Looney Tunes characters to entertain them.   Since they primarily use the click of the mouse, it's easy also for the younger ones even though so many kids can probably use a computer better than many adults.  There is an option to repeat the question and if they get the answer wrong, they get a pleasant message telling them to try again.  They can also restart the lesson and repeat a lesson.  They really enjoyed our complimentary trial subscription and I do feel they learned from it.  It was nice to see them enjoy something that also was educational.

The Looney Tunes site has many tabs:

  • Parents - try out sample lessons, why choose Looney Tunes Phonics, program overview, research based information, industry best reports, FAQ and system requirements (to run the program).
  • Teachers - similar to the parents tab but also includes free school trial, core correlations and NCLB.
  • Administrators - similar to the Teachers tab.
  • Store - to purchase other Looney Tune products both home and school.
  • Success stories - always a plus to hear how others gained from their experiences with the program.
  • Order now - self explanatory

If you connect on Twitter and Facebook, you can get the latest news, tips and more.

Overall, my children really enjoyed the Looney Tunes ClickN Read Phonics program and I loved the fact that they had fun while learning.  It was refreshing to see them not cringe when I told them it was time to learn some phonics!  Very good program, entertaining, easy to use and easy to understand from an audible standpoint.

Right now until 12/31/12, you can save 15% for the Looney Tunes Phonics program with code: 15PERCNS15!

*Disclosure:  I received a 30 day complimentary subscription to this program.  The opinions are of my own.

Newman's Own: Delicious!

I received this huge box of Newman's Own and can't wait to share it with you.  This is not the same as Newman's products as this a company started by the infamous Paul Newman's daughter, Nell.  I saw her on Martha Stewart talking about her business, why organic products are important to her and the special memories she had for her father, Paul Newman.  It was a touching show because I still remember seeing it.  Paul Newman is a legend and when he passed, I was saddened in the lack of coverage on his death.  He was an actor I grew up with and watched him grow old like my father has.  He was beloved by so many and I admired him for his donation of proceeds from Newman's to charity.  He was all inspiring and now his daughter continues in his foot steps.

So far, I've tried the Caramel Cups, the Chocolate ABC Cookies, Raisins and the Orange Chocolate Chip Cookies and all I can say is YUMMY!  Some might expect an organic product to not taste as good but all these products are just fantastic.  I was very surprised myself at how good they are.  Rich in flavor and nothing is missing.  My girls loved the ABC cookies as well.

Stay tuned for more reviews and a giveaway!

A Jane Austen Love

I'm an avid Jane Austen fan and I'm deviating a bit from what I normally write about and in fact, I have been a bit missing in action for awhile now.  I struggle with finishing my novel, expanding our non-profit and so much more.  I truly believe I have some form of attention deficit or I just merely want to do it all.  I had a conversation with my father not too long ago about how he has never truly been excellent at one thing because he dabbled in so many others things and I found myself nodding in agreement with myself.  I'm a causality of my father but that is okay because at least I can experience a lot.  So I deviated from my topic at hand.

I've watched too many time then I care to admit Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion and Becoming Jane.  I somehow think I'm missing one but for the life of me I cannot recall it and I don't feel like opening a new window on my slow laptop.  I know Gweneth Paltrow made a version of it.  So Becoming Jane, although much was assumed, presumed or otherwise just made up, it a look into Jane's life with what was presumed to be the love of her life that got away.  Tom Lefroy made an equal match for her and the story of Becoming Jane is a story that leaves you sad for Jane.  If you know much about Jane Austen, you know she died fairly young.  Her stories that I noted above all evolve around love and they are passionate, nearly impossible love that endures and has a happy ending.  Hence, one scene from Becoming Jane where she is talking to Cassandra after the death of Robert and tells her that her story is of two sisters who go through tragic situations but end up in love.

Back to the point of this post.  Jane wrote of such depth and of such love that it would seem impossible for her to not have experienced it herself.  There is speculation on what she actually did versus did not do but unfortunately, Cassandra destroyed many of Jane's correspondences out of respect so not a lot is known.  To watch the movies, you see the love and the anguish they produce.  Pride and Prejudice is a perfect example of love that was not suppose to be due to one's station in life but you cannot help but fall for Mr. Darcy and relish in their love and the passionate fire they had for one another.  Or in Persuasion, as you see the continued regret Ann carries for giving up her one true love and all she has to do to find it again.  Mansfield Park is no different.  All stories of forbidden love or love blocked yet all persevered. It leaves you longing for the intensity or just wondering how she could have made that up.  Nonetheless, her stories continue to endure the changes of time but are timely in forbidden love and the mix of family complications.  Each time I watch Becoming Jane, I want to change the story so her and Lefroy can go off and live happily ever after.

Tropicana Pure Premium 100% Pure Florida Orange Juice #TropFloridaOJ Sweepstakes

There is something magical about Florida and there are two thoughts that come to mind when I hear Florida:  Disney and orange juice.  For me, it's not just any juice but Tropicana Pure Premium 100% Pure Florida Orange Juice.  I have always been a fan of Tropicana especially when I was sick with a cold, I would ask only for Tropicana.  It's the most freshest tasting orange juice in my opinion.

I've been to Florida many times and love it.  I have fond memories of every time I've been there and I can still remember the first time I saw an orange tree.  Growing up in Indiana doesn't afford you the opportunity to see an orange tree and given that I led a sheltered life, it was really cool to see it.  Although the first time I saw an orange tree in Florida wasn't associated with my most favorite visit, it does tie in with my memories.

Two year's ago, I took all three of my girls to Florida.  We stayed in a rental house and went to Disney.  We happened to go on a Sunday and it was during Star Wars weekends so we were in heaven.  All three of my girls are Star Wars fans so this was the ultimate trip.  After we had our fill of Disney, we did some exploration of the surrounding areas within Florida.  The girls were equally tickled with the orange trees as we had a grove of them near the rental house.  I didn't know this but Tropicana is the single largest buyer of Florida fruit and uses groves in 22 different counties across Florida.  One of the things we also did when we arrived was to shop for groceries as it's so much more convenient to have your own food when you are relaxing.

If you are heading out to Florida this year, check out the surroundings if you are driving around.  Did you know that oranges have been grown in Florida since the 1560's?  I had no idea!  Tropicana's history even dates back to the 1960's with one of their grower relationships.  It's nice to hear how much Tropicana remains a part of our history today.

Tropicana has a sweepstakes right now called Tropicana's Perfect Pick.  All you have to do is go to their Facebook page (click link) and "like" the page and start picking to see if you have won a trip to Sarasota or a year's supply of orange juice (12 coupons)!  You can enter once a day and you get fun little tid bits of information.  Might as well learn all you can before you embark on that next trip as it's fun to play did you know with your little ones.

I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms and Tropicana blogging program, to earn My SocialMoms Rewards Points. The opinions and ideas expressed here are my own. To read more posts on this topic, click here.

Home in the Cave by Janet Halfmann Children's Book Review

home in the caveAnother great educational and entertaining book by Janet Halfmann is Home in the Cave.  I really like all the books I have read to date from Ms. Halfmann who has the ability to take typically perceived non-adorable characters such as snakes and bats and turns them into great stories to teach.  The stories all have a teaching component about the particular subject but it also has an entertaining aspect such as learning why bat shouldn't be afraid to leave his home in the cave.

Baby bat is so comfortable with his mom in the safety of the cave since it's all he has ever known.  He hears the stories told by other baby bats and becomes increasingly frightened at the prospects of ever leaving.  In an attempt to not disappoint his mom, he practices his flying ability and ends up meeting an unexpected partner who will teach him the importance of his existence with the others in the cave.  Baby bat soon understands his role and changes his mind about growing up and leaving the cave.  The story might also appeal to younger children first leaving for school given their fear of leaving their "cave" as well.  I found it entertaining with innocent little baby bat and the inclusion of bits of scientific information.

The back section includes something very familiar with Ms. Halfmann's other stories which is a creative minds extra.  Teachers, parents and those who homeschool will find it full of a wealth of information that surpasses it as only an entertaining story.  From life in a cave to rock formations to bats, the children will most likely enjoy the extra sections at the back.

Ms. Halfmann has many children's books to her name that will provide entertainment and great topics to teach.  Shennen Bersani, award-winning children's book illustrator, provided the vivid and detailed illustrations.  I recommend the 32 page Home in the Cave which can be purchased at Sylvan Dell Publishing.

*Disclosure:  I was not compensated for this review.  I did review via a complimentary e-Book link provided by the author on the Sylvan Dell Publishing site.

Saving Money with CouponCodes4U

Coupon Codes - CouponCodes4u.com

I love to shop online mostly because it's convenient and I can get just about anything I want with a few clicks of the mouse and never leaving my house.  When I do shop, I learned a long time ago to never hit the purchase button until I checked for any online coupons or special deals.  If you do what I do, you will notice that there are many, many sites out there with coupon codes just by searching on Google.  Some coupons are valid and others tend to not be valid often and it's frustrating when you think you found a great coupon code and it ends up being expired.  CouponCodes4U is stock full of coupon codes and they are indexed if you choose not to use the search function.

I will admit that I had never used CouponCodes4u before because I hadn't heard of them.  I wanted to try them out so I tried a few different searches based on items I frequently purchase online.  I'm a big consumer of vitamins and credit them with keeping us healthy since November 2010.  The girls and I take vitamins daily which can add up to a lot of money monthly.  CouponCodes4U even has Puritans Pride Coupon Codes to help save more money with specials such as up to 40% off and free shipping on orders over $50.  I just checked out some of the prices and I'm definitely over paying for some of the vitamins I take.  In addition to vitamins, I also am adamant about my skin and have tried many products over the years to try to keep healthy skin.  If you are a LovelySkin.com shopper, you will be happy to know there are even LovelySkin.com Coupon Codes.  If you haven't shopped there, you might be surprised at the sheer number of named brand beauty products available.

CouponCodes4U really has a lot to offer if you want to save money and you can sign up for free to stay abreast of the latest news and deals.  Some of their coupons are even exclusives so you definitely want to sign up so you don't miss out.  Did I mention they even have printable coupons?  I really like how the site is set up with a variety of ways to search for the best deals such as categories, exclusives, top 50, new and more.  Since Easter is coming upon us quickly, they reminded me I better start shopping with the special Easter section as well.

It's a one stop shop for saving money.  I signed up and am going to follow them on Facebook and Twitter so I don't miss out on anything.

Children’s Advil® Don’t Let the Flu Get You Blue

Children's Advil® Suspension
I used to be one of those parents who felt immediate fear at the first sign of a fever.  When my youngest one became sick, she would automatically vomit any type of liquid medicine so with her, I was a bit more fearful as I would have to take her to the hospital if her fever didn't break or became too high since I had no remedy for her.  My two older children had no problems with fever reducers and finally, my youngest can stand liquid medicine so I no longer have to worry. I think it was a year ago when I made the switch to Children's Advil® from other brands.  I trusted Advil®'s brand and quality and to this day, I still purchase it.  My children don't get many fevers luckily but my eight year old who suffers from epilepsy and migraines, takes Children's Advil® for headaches and it usually works unless it's a full blown migraine.

When I was provided the opportunity to post about Children's Advil®, I had no problems as I had posted in the past because I believe in the brand.  Although this time, I did receive a gift pack, it didn't influence my decision to post because as I stated, I have posted without compensation in the past.  When I believe in a product, I like to blog about it.  When I received the information on the surveys, I was surprised that nearly a quarter of parents (23%) admit to giving their children and over-the-counter medication at a lower dose to treat fevers which was really surprising to me.  If you want to read more about the surveys along with some tips, just scroll down.

Check out Children's Advil on their website and Facebook.

I can tell you that the girls were HAPPY to see this come in the mail!  My little one grabbed the teddy bear and wasn't letting it go.  Of course she has to share but they just love this little pack of fun!  The pop cycle mold will come in handy since those are always nice to help when a child is feeling bad and doesn't want to drink.  It was an amazing pack and I particularly loved the variety of Children's Advil I received even though I just stocked up on some.  I will be sure to use it!

According to these two new national surveys of parents and pediatricians from the makers of Children’s Advil®, more than half of all parents report feeling anxious, fearful or helpless when their child comes down with a fever so I know I wasn't alone. This is nothing new to the vast majority of pediatricians (94 percent) who believe that parents need more fever management education.

In an effort to ease parents’ anxiety and minimize risks, Children’s Advil® has partnered with nationally recognized pediatrician, Alanna Levine, M.D., to introduce a fever relief program this cold and flu season to educate parents on common misperceptions and best practices when it comes to treating a child’s fever.

Fever Relief Tips

To help better prepare for fevers during cold and flu season, Dr. Alanna Levine and the makers of Children’s Advil® recommend the following tips to parents:

-   Stay Cool:  Remember that most fevers are in fact indicators that the body is fighting an underlying illness.
-   Be Prepared: Start the season by talking to a pediatrician about proper fever management.  Also, check the medicine cabinet to ensure that all medications have not expired or been recalled.
-   Watch for Serious Signs:  Generally, it’s time to call a pediatrician:
·         if your child is less than three months old and has a fever of 100 degrees or higher;
·         if the fever is over 103 degrees, no matter what the child’s age;
·         if the fever lasts more than three days;
·         if your child has a fever and looks and acts very sick;
·         if you are concerned regarding your child’s health.
-   Long Lasting Relief: When choosing a fever medication, be sure to consider how long the medication will last.  Children’s Advil®®, which contains ibuprofen, provides up to 8-hours of relief with one dose.

Disclosure: Thank you to Children’s Advil® for providing free product samples, the survey information, and gift pack.
