Ever Try to Cancel from Proactive? Yikes...

I completely understand these customer service agents that answer the phone when you call to cancel a reoccuring order make their money based on talking you out of cancelling but the woman at ProActive was amazingly rude.  She continued to overtalk me, she kept repeating everything because she kept cutting me that she didn't understand the comment/question I was making.

After all that, she had the audacity to even continue to talk me out of cancelling my membership.

I guess the spirit of good customer service is not warranted in some businesses in spite of the economy.

Epilepsy Awareness Month: Epilepsy Therapy Project

Nothing is more terrifying than experiencing a seizure especially a first time seizure when it comes to epilepsy.  I remember my daughter's first seizure and the level of panic that gripped me of not knowing what was going on or what to do.  No warning, no nothing and all of sudden, it looked like she was having a stroke.  I was scared beyond my wildest imagination.  After many tests and procedures, her diagnosis came and we were faced with a twice a day treatment for what appears to be Benign Rolandic Epilepsy.  I'm not too keen on pumping this trial and error medication into her but the alternative of waiting and seeing is not one I prefer.

The problem with epilepsy is so much is still not known and treatment is literally a watch and see what works.  For some, it works and for others, it helps to reduce the number of seizures and for others, nothing works.  That is why it's so important for research to continue in uncovering what causes epilepsy, what can be done to treat it and to help understand all aspects of the possible genetic component.

Epilepsy Therapy Project, sponsor of www.epilepsy.com, is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization founded by parents and doctors caring for children with uncontrolled seizures by supporting the development of new therapies that offer freedom from seizures and side effects. Read more about the Epilepsy Therapy Project and how your donations can help support our mission to accelerate ideas into therapies for people living with epilepsy and seizures.

PurpleTrail Online Invitations and eCard Review

This is a Mama Buzz review. The product was provided by: PurpleTrail for this review.

Need a great way to create, send and/or print cards and invitations online?  Party planners and novice planners are enjoying the ease of PurpleTrail as the only provider of online, stylish, ad-free invitations and eCards for free.  There are membership options available to customize for each own's needs and preferences starting at only $5.

My review is a step by step process of creating my first online invitation post a very easy registration process that takes very little time and was not difficult.

  1. Just click "Get Started."
  2. Options include "Print Invitations & Cards" or "Online Invitations & Cards."
  3. I chose "Online Invitations & Cards" and had over 69 pages of choices.  You can click on and see the 69 pages of choices and sort through page by page or enter what you are looking through in the Search box for designs.  If you place your mouse over the "Online Invitations & Cards" text, it will allow you to search that way as well.
  4. I chose the  "Christmas" designs via the mouse hovering option and had to choose from an abundance of great designs that made it very hard to choose from!
  5. I was very easily able to choose options such as adding my own photo (or one from PurpleTrail), my text, embellishments and more.
  6. Once I uploaded my photo, I was able to choose the opacity level, other options such as black and white (there are more), crop the photo and add frames.  I won't go through all the steps as the program is easy to follow when creating your cards and invitations.
  7. To print, PurpleTrail allows the user to sort by selecting the preferred formats: "Print Format" options by choosing Postcard 6x4, Postcard 4x6, Folded Card 8.5x5.5, Folded Card 5.5x8.5 or all sizes.  For this review, I selected the Postcard, 4x6 option.  The free membership provides two pages of choices.
This is what the final outcome looks like once e-mailed to your guest:

PurpleTrail also offers a nice how to tour here which I found as a must have.  I needed a little more explanation on how to add things and remove them.  The invitation box was what prompted me to take the tour.

Other great features of PurpleTrail:
  • Fun and great looking invitations, e-cards and announcements.
  • Thousands of designs to choose from or create your own unique design.
  • Send invitations through email, SMS, Twitter and Facebook.
  • Ad free!
  • Chat with your guests in real time, add a map to the event venue, pot-luck feature which helps each guest specify what they are getting for the party.
  • Easily manage and track guest responses.
  • Easy to use.
  • Visit the party ideas section and blog with tons of great ideas for your party.
  • The invites are Ad free, so your guests/friends won’t have to see ads along with your invites/e-cards.
  • Four different membership types with one being FREE.
Overall, I enjoyed PurpleTrail and will continue to utilize it for my online cards and invitations.  I am curious about the other membership levels and might take a peek to experiment on what I like the best.  Free is good though and the quality of choices is excellent.

I enjoy getting insightful, useful beauty tips especially from trusted household brands.  Unilever has a beauty widget that is on the right side of my blog in the widget area.  I also embedded the code in this blog for easier viewing pleasure.  This widget features a new beauty tip every day, access to see products, videos and a bonus linked to Body, Hair and Face.

Today's Hair Beauty Tip is a great quick, easy video on a "Blow Out" technique to create smoother, shiner hair.  I already dry my hair in another room to avoid the moisture from my shower which was one of the steps in achieving gorgeous hair.  I didn't know that the cool setting provides a lock in feature to benefit the hair once you dry it in sections.  Very nice ideas if you want to learn more, check it out each day!  One of the things I also do to protect and nourish my hair is to leave conditioner on it for 10 minutes wrapped in a towel once a week.

Don't forget to click on the "bonus" tab to see what awaits you!

Unilever has numerous products ranging from Food, Personal to Health.   One of the best things that Unilever focuses on with the Dove brand is the Campaign for Real Beauty, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund (DSEF) that launched in 2004 to help make women feel more beautiful everyday.  I love this campaign as it uses REAL women and not fake, unrealistic one's.

SeeHerebyFuji Photo Greeting Card Review

Thanks to Freebies4Mom, I was able to get 50 personally designed beautiful Christmas cards from Fuji for FREE to include FAST shipping!  That's a great deal so thanks to Freebies4Mom for the code and alert (freebies4mom-1109) at SeeHerebyFuji.  That was a $39.50 savings before shipping!  This expires November 30!

I just received my 50 free cards after just ordering them on Sunday night.  Totally FREE!  The print paper is a little flimsy and I would have preferred a heavier weight paper for both the photo card and envelopes but the quality of the image is excellent.  For FREE, you can beat that!  Even for those that need to watch their budgets and had to pay full price, it's still an excellent deal.  Last year, I made my cards at Zazzle and although the quality if of higher quality for the paper, the images were comparable at a fraction of the cost if I had to pay full price.

I'll probably retry it as I'm a perfectionist (usually) and will try my hand with professionally taken portraits (I took these) and my Zazzle account.

Loosely based on (or "inspired by", if you will) the classic Bard's Tale series that began as an Apple II RPG in 1985, this new installment brings a fresh dose of comedy to the genre with a 3D isometric view that runs on the Champions of Norrath engine. Is a dragon terrorizing the locals? The Bard will take care of it... for the right price. Local princess held captive? The Bard is your man... as long as she's hot. Use the Snarky/Nice conversation to pick the tone -- be an ass or show some class. Your attitude will affect the events that unfold and create a personalized experience for each player. Develop your combat party by summoning a group of eccentrics and misfits to do your bidding - sixteen summoned creatures in all. The game runs on the Champions of Norrath engine and features locations based on the storied land of the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland - the inspiration for the classic fantasy worlds.

GlobalGiving: Changing the World With Your Help

GlobalGiving connects donors with their own chosen community-based projects.  Projects are broken down by region so you have the choice to pick what you want your donations to go to.  Even Oprah has a registry "For All Women" should you choose to join forces with her.

E-bay and celebrities have joined forces with GlobalGiving to raise additional funds by bidding on celebrity items.  This week is Cher. Proceeds will help care for kids at a school in Kenya, and encourage and empower American soldiers and veterans - both great causes supported by Cher!

They are even sponsoring a challenge to increase the funds by matching.  The Give More - Get More Challenge runs through December 1. Donate to your favorite projects - the more they raise, the more matching funds they can earn. Projects that raise the most money, or get the most donations, can win bonus funding, too!

There are so many options to choose from and so many good causes your money will help both domestic and abroad.  I had never heard of this agency but love the idea of choosing where my funds will go.

Public Service Healthcare-Associated Infection

I'm helping spread the word about Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI) mostly because it's near and dear to me.  If you aren't aware, there are three types of HAIs:
  1. Ventilator - Associated Pneumonia (VAP) - VAP is the source of the highest morbidity and mortality of all HAIs.  My two year old's condition worsened a year ago to the point of almost causing her death which was partially attributed to the VAP.  For more information, click HERE.
  2. Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) - Another one dear and near to me because three year's ago, my father was diagnosed with colon cancer.  During his treatment, he developed a very painful infection in his tailbone related to a procedure.  Any breach of a patient's skin can lead to infection and can turn deadly. To understand SSIs, click HERE.
  3. Cross Contamination (Contact Transfer) is the number one source of HAIs.  To read more, click HERE.
When someone develops an infection at a hospital or other patient care facility that they did not have prior to treatment, this is referred to as a healthcare-associated (sometimes hospital-acquired) infection (HAI).

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a global crisis affecting both patients and healthcare workers.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at any point in time, 1.4 million people worldwide suffer from infections acquired in hospitals.

A Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report published in March-April 2007 estimated the number of U.S. deaths from healthcare associated infections in 2002 at 98,987.

As part of an ongoing commitment to quality care and infection prevention, nationwide doctors and hospitals are partnering with Kimberly-Clark to deliver continuing education programs on healthcare-associated infection (HAI) prevention to staff and management. As simple as education sounds, busy doctors and nurses on the front lines of delivering care can find it difficult to find the time to take advantage of scheduled programs within their hospitals.

Always remind your healthcare provide to wash his/her hand before touching you.

What three favorite family Thanksgiving traditions have you passed or will pass on to your children?

Growing up in a limited extended family, holiday traditions weren't overly memorable.  We did have the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving with an overindulgent feast but that is all I can recall.  The holidays are very special to me and I hope that with my actions, my girls will grow up to continue, extend or find their own tradition.

TwitterMoms (click for how to enter your traditions) has teamed up with Target for another thoughtful blogger challenge on "What three favorite Thanksgiving traditions have you plassed or will pass on to your children?"
  • Tradition 1:  Watching football!  We are huge fans of football and all five of us have special teams.  We have own own team supportive jerseys with our names on the back.  The two younger girls get to wear the team's jersey of who they favor or want something from at the moment.
  • Tradition 2:  Creating all the delicious foods my mom made growing up each Thanksgiving.  This includes candied yams which are my favorite!  My mom makes the BEST candied yams.
  • Tradition 3: This is a new tradition as now that we are together as a larger family (remarried three year's ago to my Army husband), I plan on creating a photo book through Target's partner Kodak of the day's pictures and during dinner, each person will need to say what they are thankful for.  The beginning of the book will be broken down by a picture of each person in attendance with their quote added.  The books will be done every year as a momento to the girls as they grow to reflect back at their changing lives.  I'm sure the two year old will just be happy to watch Yo Gabba Gabba but I'll fill in for her.
I hope they will take the memories and grow with them!

Happy Veteran's Day

My husband is sleeping in this morning but since he's a veteran, that's the least he can do on a day to honor his over 17 years of service, numerous deployments and all the missed time he has had to endure with all five kids.  Yahoo is carrying a story on the origins or signficance of 11 am on 11/11:

Back in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a stop to hostilities was declared, ending World War I. An armistice to cease the fighting on the Western Front was signed by the Allied powers and Germany.

President Woodrow Wilson immediately proclaimed the day "Armistice Day," kicking off the annual commemoration on November 11. But over the years, with veterans returning from World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day — a day reserved to honor veterans returning from all wars. But 11/11 still represented the end of the Great War in the public's mind, and the date stuck.

In 1921, unidentified dead from the war were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., Westminster Abbey in London, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The tradition to honor those killed in the war but never identified continues every year in the U.S. The ceremony is held at 11 a.m. at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

Congress designated Veterans Day as a legal holiday in 1938, and since then, most Americans have come to know it as a day for store sales and parades. Yahoo! Searches on the holiday have already surged on the Web. People want to know "veterans day history," "veterans day closings," veterans day sales," and "veterans day free meals."
Make sure to thank a Vet today as they make great sacrifices for our freedom.  The conditions in Afghanistan are deplorable with more and more deaths.  Call your politician and demand to either leave or put out more troops to allow them to have proper defenses.  I usually try to stray away from politics but our men and women are dying and they need the proper support to fight and protect themselves.

Happy Veteran's Day to my husband, my father, my four uncles and all the other men and women!

This Christmas, visit your local VA and volunteer!  Your heart will be warmed and your eyes will fill with happiness as you see how much you can help!
